Service in the bar area was excellent — attentive, friendly, and efficient. The noise level was exactly what you’d expect for a bar setting, lively but not overwhelming, and it created a relaxed, social atmosphere that made the evening comfortable and enjoyable. One of the most impressive aspects of Tippecanoe Place is the building itself. The historic preservation is outstanding, and it truly feels like stepping back in time. The dining room carries a more formal, elegant tone, while the bar area offers a more laid-back option, which makes the restaurant appealing to a wide range of guests.
Pricing felt fair for both the quality of the food and the unique setting. Parking was easy and convenient, which is always appreciated for a place of this significance. Tippecanoe Place is clearly loved by locals, and it’s easy to see why. It’s also a must-see for tourists. We would absolutely return and highly recommend it to history lovers, couples, and anyone looking for a memorable dining experience in a remarkable setting.
We got seated by a window, which gave us a nice view of the mansion’s yard. The service was good, our waitress knew what she was doing and she was nice. We started with the spinach artichoke dip with crab added. The dip itself was good, but unfortunately some of the chips had an odd texture. But spoiler alert, it was the only disappointing thing we had I wanted some French onion soup. That was really good, yum
For our entree, we both got the prime rib. I haven’t had prime rib in awhile so I was excited I got it medium rare, and when it came out it was beautiful! We both got it Oscar style too. I tried one bite: Yes, this is a good prime rib! Wonderfully tender and excellent flavor! And the Oscar style was a nice enhancement The mashed potatoes were done right too, I love me some good taters. And the horseradish cream is amazing! Arminda said it’s the best she’s ever tasted, I can’t disagree!
And lastly, dessert: Hazelnut mousse. It wasn’t as thick as I was expecting, but it was pretty and tasty! After dinner we explored more of the mansion before starting the drive home. This was a great end to our date day, and an eye opener to how beautiful the history of South Bend is.
The food ranged from really good to terrible. We had the puff pastry wrapped baked bri appetizer, which came with an assortment of fresh fruit and little pita like triangles. Honestly, it tasted like a bri toaster studle. I would have preferred it as a dessert. My salmon was the best entre of the 3, very moist, and the portion sizes are generous. The chicken Oscar was tasty but dry. My boyfriend liked it. The Piccata with shrimp was terribly bland. Absolutely no flavor to it. Definitely would not recommend. There was a nice crust on the creme Brule, but the creme part of it wasn’t the smooth custard I expected. It still tasted good, but it wasn’t amazing.
3 people: 1 bottle of wine, 1 appetizer, 3 entres, and 1 dessert came to $156 without tip.
The staff is friendly, if a little disorganized perhaps. I was surprised at the incredibly relaxed attire of the wait staff. The grandeur of the studebaker mansion sets a vibe, and the bright array of sports jerseys, t shirts and blue jeans kind of detracted from that. It makes it hard to identify who works there. A little cordination in this department would boost the ambiance big time. Upon entry, there’s not really signage or people to direct you where to go. We walked in in the middle of a wedding reception, and we’re so confused. There is a counter to the left of the main entrance, but it wasn’t manned and the slew of people made it hard to see where to go. Someone did show up pretty quick though, looked like he just came out of the kitchen wearing a white apron, and he seemed a little confused but got us to our table.
After our meal they told us we could look around the mansion on our own, we didn’t really get a look at the 3rd floor other than the bathrooms because there was a birthday party going on and that felt awkward. There was a room up there with the door open with what looked like hundreds of chairs in a pile, not stacked, piled. It was so weird.
The wedding party was using some of the rooms on the second floor that I accidentally walked in on, also awkward, and it looked like we just missed a memorial service in the basement! I think they rent out rooms or floors for events, so be aware that random people will be wandering though at random times, and some random things are kept in random places. Still it’s a beautiful house on beautiful grounds and a great place for pictures.
but as I had this recently I opted for the duck. To drain the fat from underneath the skin, it should be pricked and this was not done. A steak knife is needed to disarticulate, and this was provided upon request. Meat was overcooked. Sides fine. Pinot noir over chilled.
