Peking Mandarin Restaurant Reviews – Chicago’s Hidden Gem
Reviews
For appetizers, we started with the crab cheese rangoons. They were great on the outside—crispy and well-fried—but the filling was very similar to what you can find at many other Asian restaurants, nothing unique. The potstickers were probably the largest I’ve ever seen, but they suffered from the same issue: the filling was underwhelming. Surprisingly, the egg rolls were the standout among the appetizers—they were genuinely delicious and exceeded expectations.
We had intended to try the seafood soup, but the staff recommended a different option that included seafood, pork, and beef. Unfortunately, it didn’t impress—it was just an average soup, nothing special.
For the main courses, we had the fried rice with seafood and beef, which was very good, and the sweet and sour pork, which was surprisingly tasty. The black bean noodles were definitely my favorite. It was something I hadn’t tried before, and I really enjoyed the flavors and texture—it felt unique compared to the other dishes.
Service deserves a special mention—our server was attentive, and our water glasses were never empty, which made the experience more comfortable and pleasant.
Overall, Peking Mandarin isn’t bad by any means, and there were a few dishes that were enjoyable, but it’s definitely not the culinary experience it’s often made out to be. I might come back to try a few more items, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.
The service was just as bad. The waitress took our order, but by the time we were ready to leave, the fourth dish still hadn’t arrived. We assumed they forgot to put it in. However, when it was time to pay, they had actually charged us for the dish we never even received. That was incredibly frustrating.
The entire experience felt chaotic and disorganized. It seemed like there was no coordination in the kitchen or among the staff. Overall, it was a waste of both time and money.
Very disappointing experience. I definitely won’t be returning.
Cannot wait to come back. There is an art to their dishes and I can’t wait to work through the menu.
Side Note: Anyone upset about them gaining popularity is just plain selfish. I want them to be rolling in money and slammed every day. They deserve it and you wouldn’t understand how difficult it is to survive for so long in this industry
Probably will give them one more chance in the future, maybe once things slow down from the current hype. But this experience was very disappointing with how service was handled.
FYI this is not a Korean restaurant even though half the menu is in Korean (hangul). It is a Chinese restaurant which offers the authentic Chinese dishes of which popular Korean dishes interpret the Chinese dish their own way (such as Jajangmyeon).
No credit cards are accepted here, so your Amex will not work here. Cash or Zelle only. No ATM on site, but there is one in the grocery store across the street according to staff. To pay, you just walk up to the cash register after your meal.
The service was fantastic; our server offered helpful recommendations that really elevated the meal.
The only drawback is that they don’t accept credit cards, so come prepared with cash.
Stepping inside the restaurant feels like a trip back to the ’90s, bringing a wave of nostalgia and good vibes.
If you haven’t tried PMR yet, you’re missing out. The food speaks for itself—you’ll be blown away.
