Peking Mandarin definitely didn’t live up to the hype for me. Overall, it was a somewhat mediocre experience—maybe a bit above average, but nothing truly memorable. We tried several items during our visit.

For appetizers, we started with the crab cheese rangoons. They were great on the outside—crispy and well-fried—but the filling was very similar to what you can find at many other Asian restaurants, nothing unique. The potstickers were probably the largest I’ve ever seen, but they suffered from the same issue: the filling was underwhelming. Surprisingly, the egg rolls were the standout among the appetizers—they were genuinely delicious and exceeded expectations.

We had intended to try the seafood soup, but the staff recommended a different option that included seafood, pork, and beef. Unfortunately, it didn’t impress—it was just an average soup, nothing special.

For the main courses, we had the fried rice with seafood and beef, which was very good, and the sweet and sour pork, which was surprisingly tasty. The black bean noodles were definitely my favorite. It was something I hadn’t tried before, and I really enjoyed the flavors and texture—it felt unique compared to the other dishes.

Service deserves a special mention—our server was attentive, and our water glasses were never empty, which made the experience more comfortable and pleasant.

Overall, Peking Mandarin isn’t bad by any means, and there were a few dishes that were enjoyable, but it’s definitely not the culinary experience it’s often made out to be. I might come back to try a few more items, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.

I decided to try this place because of all the social media reviews claiming the food was amazing — but honestly, I have no idea what they were talking about. The food was extremely disappointing. Everything we ordered was either too dry or completely bland. I ended up throwing most of it away because it just wasn’t enjoyable.

The service was just as bad. The waitress took our order, but by the time we were ready to leave, the fourth dish still hadn’t arrived. We assumed they forgot to put it in. However, when it was time to pay, they had actually charged us for the dish we never even received. That was incredibly frustrating.

The entire experience felt chaotic and disorganized. It seemed like there was no coordination in the kitchen or among the staff. Overall, it was a waste of both time and money.

Very disappointing experience. I definitely won’t be returning.

This restaurant perfectly recreates the look of a 1960s old-style jajangmyeon shop. The taste is just like the classic jajangmyeon and really hits the nostalgia factor. Portions are generous, and it’s cash-only.

Portions are huge. Really good price/food ratio. Just one plate is enough for two people. Taste is okay nothing special. Would I go again there ? probably not

Every dish comes out fast, hot, and perfectly cooked. The servers treat everyone like regulars, and you can tell they care about getting it right without fuss or pretense.

Cannot wait to come back. There is an art to their dishes and I can’t wait to work through the menu.

This is place is amazing…..as is Chrissy! It has some of the best food in the city. Just look at the pics!

Side Note: Anyone upset about them gaining popularity is just plain selfish. I want them to be rolling in money and slammed every day. They deserve it and you wouldn’t understand how difficult it is to survive for so long in this industry

Sweet and Sour pork was delicious but Jjajangmyeon was lacking flavor and was watery. Service was not great, after ordering took around 30-40 minutes to be served our food. And even checking out to pay took another 30 minutes. However I can’t blame them that much because they’re going viral at the moment on social media, so they’re really busy. But one thing that can’t be forgiven is how the male older server kept purposely ignoring us. We would say excuse me and tried to wave to him multiple times but he always face his head away from us while he walk past us.

Probably will give them one more chance in the future, maybe once things slow down from the current hype. But this experience was very disappointing with how service was handled.

Went here on a Monday night with my girlfriend, and to my surprise, it was very full. We got the black bean noodles (Cha Chiang Mein), sweet and spicy chicken, mushrooms/greens, and three seafood soup. (We also ordered the lollipop wings, but unfortunately they it took so long, we cancelled the order. Staff still offered it no charge to make up for the delay). Food was very good 4/5 and reasonably priced with generous portions. Service was good, but very slow. We were hoping to order some beverages but never got to.

FYI this is not a Korean restaurant even though half the menu is in Korean (hangul). It is a Chinese restaurant which offers the authentic Chinese dishes of which popular Korean dishes interpret the Chinese dish their own way (such as Jajangmyeon).

No credit cards are accepted here, so your Amex will not work here. Cash or Zelle only. No ATM on site, but there is one in the grocery store across the street according to staff. To pay, you just walk up to the cash register after your meal.

Peking Mandarin Restaurant is easily my favorite Chinese spot in Chicago. Their black bean noodles are hands down the best in the city. The Mongolian beef, sweet and sour pork, and gang pong gi are all incredible—just as good as Great Seas used to be back in the day.

The service was fantastic; our server offered helpful recommendations that really elevated the meal.

The only drawback is that they don’t accept credit cards, so come prepared with cash.

Stepping inside the restaurant feels like a trip back to the ’90s, bringing a wave of nostalgia and good vibes.

If you haven’t tried PMR yet, you’re missing out. The food speaks for itself—you’ll be blown away.
