It wasn’t expensive and service was helpful and lightning fast, but my beef pho was just dull. Rather than a bowl of delicious savory flavor, it was so flat. The meat was OK but also lacked any kick, even when I added sauce and sriracha. The noodles were OK. And the ambiance of the place at night is kind of decrepit and dark. I can’t recommend it, as much as I’d like to.

We found this little gem in Santa Cruz and had their Pho, it was just what we needed to get us started for the day after a long night of drinking and fun! The broth was hot but a little on the bland side, veggies and meat were fresh and the service was great!

Service was fine, food was absolutely terrible. My father ordered the lemongrass chicken and received one grilled and flavorless piece of chicken with a ball of rice and a few slices of carrot and cabbage as a side. The pho I ordered was flavorless. Don’t go here.

I just moved to Santa Cruz and it looks like this is the only Vietnamese food place in town. I was glad to find it. It’s not the best Vietnamese food I’ve ever had, but it’s almost unfair to compare this restaurant to the amazing Vietnamese food spots in Orange County and San Jose, where the Vietnamese population is significantly larger. I had the pho tai bo vien (beef noodle soup with rare slices and meat balls) and my partner had the thit xao chay (vegetarian/vegan stir fried meat with veggies). Both were generally tasty, albeit on the salty side, and filling. I plan on coming back. They added a pho chay, a vegetarian version of the pho noodle soup. We’ll try that next time and let y’all know how it goes.
UPDATE: I’ve been here a couple of times now. For the most part, it’s authentic Vietnamese food, but it’s just not-that-great Vietnamese food. But, as far as I can tell, is the only Viet place in town. So, until another one comes to town, it’ll still get a 5-star rating from me. I hope more open up.

Very new place. Happened to eat there on their opening night. Good stuff. Simple menu. Their pho was good (we had the large). We also had the noodles and BBQ pork (#17) and that was great.

This location at Fair and Mission used to be a shabby Thai Place. The newly remodeled restaurant is now called is a welcome change. They’re the only place on the west side with vegan protein options. Typo on the menu says “Vegan Moat”. They’d intended to write “vegan meat” me thinks.
When in town give it a go. The friendly staff will make you feel at home.

Having never eaten Vietnamese, I was pleasantly surprised. Staff was friendly, the restaurant is clean. I had a chicken dish with rice noodles & chopped lettuce and a very small egg roll.
Not much flavor.. But I am willing to try something else.

Authentic asian cuisine in Santa Cruz is a tricky thing to find and a much appreciated treat. 831 doesn’t do anything to elevate or expand on vietnamese food, but what they do is they do it right. The two times I have been there I have had the pho and their curry with their spring rolls and they are as good as any I have had in the bay area. At the prices that they set, its harder to find better quality to value pho in Santa Cruz.

Not sure why this place was recommended to me, I think the only reason they’re open is because there’s no other Vietnamese places arround.
The place seems to cut every corner possible. They have paper place mats for you, a bar organizer full of silverware so that the waitress doesn’t need to be bothered. My girlfriend had to go ask the waitress if we could have the drinks we ordered, which ended up being the wrong sodas anyways. Then when you’re done you can walk up front to ask for togo containers, then again to pay. We were one of only a few people on the restaurant and we only saw our server a couple times.
We got the Pho. Broth was meh, thai basil was unwashed and dirty, meatballs tasted and had the consistency of a rubber ball. You’re seasoning options are Sriracha and House sauce.

Bland grey meat in a bowl of noodles. I had to get up from my table to ask for utensils, napkins, and water. I tell my out of town guests this place is not a good representation of the great restaurants in Santa Cruz!
