I have meant to visit this restaurant for years. I finally found myself with a Saturday to go and fit their hours. And I was so incredibly excited to try this diner.
However, they were not excited for me to be there.
Let’s start with the good stuff. I ordered the mess and an order of their grilled coffee cake. It was a huge serving for the price. Tasted amazing. Pile of eggs and potatoes and veggies. The grilled coffee cake was as great as I hoped for it to be, crunchy and savory and sweet. If it’s just about the food, i’m going back every time.
However, now we get to the bad part. I came in at 10am, it appeared to be as their breakfast rush was wrapping up. Waitress were running. HARD and FAST. Nobody was slacking. So I had a lot of grace when I took my seat at the main bar and waited to be served.
And I tried to flag someone down.
And I tried again.
And a third time. And after 15 minutes, with a loud baby on my hip and a giant yellow hat, someone noticed me. They took my order, and I waited about 20 minutes for my food.
In that time I saw another couple come in and sit down the line, get immediately addressed, and served their coffee before mine. I was again, forgotten and had to flag someone down for my coffee.
Even when going to leave and pay, the lady working the register ran from the register to do something else, came back 5 minutes later, and then I could pay.
It just felt like there was 25-30 minutes added to my time here by being forgotten. The restaurant itself while keeping its rustic look, is worse for wear. Many light bulbs are out. Cobwebs. Just…doesn’t feel clean or well kept.
So maybe on a different day. With more staff. With a better time, it would have been better. But this just wasn’t an experience i want to repeat in an area with so many strong diners to pick.
I’ve never eaten in the restaurant I’ve only ordered take out twice now. My husband used to go here often with a coworker when he worked in the area years ago so he told me all about The Mess. So when we moved to the area I ordered take out here twice and got him his Mess twice and I love blueberry pancakes so that’s what I usually get.
Since I’ve never eaten here I can’t speak on whether their service is good but the people who ring me up are always very kind.
The decor could definitely use an update but I think that’s supposed to be part of the charm since this is 65 years old.
I had a Small Mess (eggs, potatoes, Turkey sausage, onions and peppers) and it was more than enough food, hot, fresh and really tasty!
One friend had a Large Mess and something called a Scrapple (still not entirely certain what exactly it is). While it wasn’t bad, it’s just not for me.
My other friend had Country Style Sausage Gravy with potatoes and omg that was very yummy too!!
Our waitress was fantastic! She was helpful without being overbearing and kept the piping hot coffee coming!
The restaurant has a very welcoming, classic diner ambiance. It’s much larger than it appears from the front of the building and everything was quite clean.
Definitely recommend and will be back next time I’m in town!
Portions are small, prices are high for items without meat. For example, two slices of French toast without meat is $6; with meat it is $7. Others have touted their Mess – which is hash browns with egg, peppers and onion with a choice of meat. Meat was one link of breakfast sausage. Small is $7.75. Should have gotten the large.
Total at the register seemed to include a surcharge for a credit card; as I did not get a detailed receipt, I am not sure.
