We went without making a table reservation on a Sunday night. There were a few tables dining already.
We were greeted by the host and seated at a large enough table for our party of 2. We ordered 3 poppadoms with the delicious chutneys & onions. We decided to begin our Viceroy experience with 2 beers and a still water (Voss big bottle 800ml) & ordered 3 poppadoms with the delicious chutneys & onions.
We ordered our main meal with 2 starters of mixed plates for 1 person comprising of an onion baji, lamb & chicken tikka. It was really tasty and just the right amount.
We ordered my lamb buhna medium heat ️ and my partners go to favourite chicken tikka masala but with a spicy madras heat ️ along with a garlic naan and one mushroom rice both of which were big enough for 2 to share.
An amazing meal, another thing to add so much meat in your curries… well done and keep up the hard work.
Staff were genuinely hardworking and nice. We will definitely be recommending to our friends and spreading the Viceroy of Windsor love!
Sadly it wasn’t a good meal.
Service was ok – nothing really to complain about – but the food was below average. Firstly it came out suspiciously quickly – in less than five minutes, making me wonder how much of it was actually made to order. I had chicken madras with pilau rice and nan, my go-to Indian restaurant order. It was way too hot, hotter than any other madras I’ve had (unusually it sliced chilli in it!) and lacked any real flavour. The sauce had an odd texture, not smooth and uniform but a little lumpy. Not that it was inedible, although I didn’t finish it because it was simply too hot. It didn’t taste like a madras just like a generic supermarket curry. The nan was fabulous: fluffy, light, buttery and straight out the tandoor but the rice was barely warm and its texture was that of yesterday’s rice reheated from the fridge. I walked home full but unsatisfied.
Overall it’s hard to recommend Viceroy Of Windsor. I was left with the impression that the curry was made excessively hot in order to mask the inadequacies of the rest of the meal, principally the lack of flavour and poor texture. The service was quick but not when it came to paying, presumably to encourage me to pay in cash and “keep the change”. Despite coming to this restaurant over a period of years, and in the (distant) past having a good experience, I’m afraid this was my last visit.
