I always get nostalgic when I visit my hometown area of McHenry county, but especially so when I go to “Tommy’s”.
I always get the “2 dog special,” which was $2.25 when I was in High School but now is $10.00!

Tommy’s is a decent spot for a quick bite. The food is pretty average – nothing to write home about, but it’s not bad either. The service was okay, a little slow, but the staff was friendly enough. The prices are reasonable, so it’s a good option if you’re on a budget. The ribs were not good. Overall, Tommy’s is fine if you’re not looking for anything fancy.

My last visits to this Tommy’s Red Hots on February 12th, 18th and 20th, 2026 were pretty much good. I came in to eat lunch. The pizza is always delicious. The staff is so polite and respectful here. There used to be problems in the past with their drive through but if you go in, never an issue. Plenty of open seating too. (Written 2-28-26)

7 months later we went back to try Tommy’s again after swearing it off for listed reasons below.
STAFF WAS FRIENDLY AND FOOD IS GREAT!
They didn’t forget anything, food was fresh and hot. I don’t expect a lot of quick eat places and they nailed it.
Thank you to the Tommy’s staff for restoring hope in their establishment! Good work yall.

Been here a few times.
The drive through staff who apparently is also the manager (when asked told me his name is Juan) is always rude.
I have made multiple visits to this location the food was slightly above average for the area; however it has changed for the worse with smaller sizes and never getting everything you order but being charged for it. FRAUD ANYONE?
Juan (the always present drive through staff) rushes you to order and always messes it up.
Literally every time I have been shorted a clearly ordered extra sauce for the gyro ($.70 each). This past time was no exception, normally I never call back for little things but this time he substituted my order of cheese stix for siracha cheese curds and denied it was his error on the phone. He claimed that the kitchen staff put the extra sauce in the bag and refused to provide any type of suitable customer service.
Again it’s a sauce not a big deal. $.70 each visit and an angry wife (of course it is her meal) will lose you a customer.
Come on Juan, every time man!?
You won’t get me again Juan. Not coming back, hopefully your ownership addresses this perpetual problem because as you read the comments on this location it is you Juan who is the problem.
Also be aware that their sandwiches are becoming smaller and smaller especially their Giant Italian beef. It is now much more skimpy on beef.
This location will fail if it continues down this path.
Losing customers of perpetual small errors and rude and incompetent staff.

1st time Philly cheese steak. Blan with no flavor. Quantity does not mean quality. Italian beef. Same flavorless meet. The only constant is good fries and fountain drink. For 18usd per person. I would skip, unless you want s hot dog and fries.

Horrible customer service. Telling me to go ahead and order, I order then they say “oh actually we’re not making that”… why not?! OH because they decided to clean all of their grills 20 minutes before closing-I just got off work and 9:40PM is not 10PM. it’s NOT closing time yet. Lazy staff and lack of quality!!!! I ordered over the phone for pick up-(same night) from the VIRGINIA STREET TOMMYS in Crystal Lake and they happily made me my food. The mainly Hispanic staff at Crystal lake VIRGINIA STREET was very accommodating and I WILL NEVER come to the TERRA COTTA location again.

I ate at this location on two separate occasions to try both their burgers and the pizza-and-fries special that they feature.
The burger is decent, though I have personally had better offerings at other locations. I do feel that the pizza and fries meal is well worth the value.

It’s obviously not a five star restaurant but as a fast food restaurant it is top notch. The italian beef sandwich I had was enormous and quite tasty. Clearly you could cut the sandwich in half and share with a friend. I plan on returning to sample some of the other selections. Wish I had taken a picture of the sandwich but I ate it before I remembered to take a picture.

Not sure how this is a foot long polish or Chicago style. First one sent back with ketchup on it second one still a mess and served with cold sausage.
Left it sitting on the table as pictured.
