Social Profile:

With high-quality made-to-order burgers, a ‘come as you are’ environment and a strange reverence for Chuck Norris, there’s no place else quite like Twisted Root. Way back before ‘gourmet burgers’ was a thing, Chefs Jason Boso & Quincy Hart decided to build a restaurant around half-pound, fresh ground burgers with a menu that allowed customers to build their own burgers with a list of crazy and inventive toppings. The two met in culinary school, after jobs in stock brokerages and telephone line repair. After paying their dues working the line at The Four Seasons & Pappas Bros, Jason & Quincy finally opened Twisted Root Burger Co. in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, Texas in 2006. Twisted Root appeared on the second season of Diners, Dr

Chain with gourmet beef, turkey & vegan burgers, plus spiked shakes. Some locations have game meats.

This was a great find. A little off the road and hard to see but definitely a place to stop. I got the Big Tex burger and it was so delicious. Decided to add the house made Chipotle Aioli ketchup for a little spice. Their regular fries were good as well. My husband got The Western burger and Freaky Fries. He said his burger was good and I tasted his fries that were so yummy I wish I would have ordered them as well. We’ll definitely be back when we’re in the area again!

I love this place! I was so disappointed when the Tyler location closed during COVID and never reopened. I didn’t even realize there was one in Athens until my cousin mentioned it while we were talking about places to eat. We actually drove past it twice before finally pulling it up on Google Maps. The signage is poor and it’s hard to see from the road. Unfortunately, I could see this location struggling if they don’t improve their visibility and overall presence.

I wish Google added a star line for location/visibility as that would get one star. Everything else gets 5 stars!

Went there for dinner the food was good. The bartender Mckinlee was amazing! She was very nice had a great attitude and was making sure we were satisfied and we didnt have to wait for service. She was very friendly and great to talk to while having a good dinner after a long day. I highly recommend going here for good food and great workers!

We originally stopped for a Starbucks latte and were surprised to find the cutest restaurant tucked right behind the drive-thru—Twisted Root Burger in Athens, Texas! We decided to pop in, and I’m so glad we did.

We were beyond impressed. The menu is huge and includes options for different dietary needs, which was a pleasant surprise. The flavors were amazing, and you could tell everything was made with care—from their unique sides and house-made sauces to the FIVE kinds of pickles you can help yourself to (pickle lovers, take note!).

The vibe is just as good as the food. The back patio is pet-friendly and full of personality with fun art, music, laid-back seating, and yard games. It was such a fun and unique experience—I definitely want to come back and bring my daughter next time!

Yikes! We came here only because it was featured in DDD and what a disappointment. Our cashier lady was quite rude. I asked for a burger cooked medium because the menu says it’s cooked medium well unless you speak up. She replies, well it’s cooked medium well. I simply reiterated my order emphasizing medium temperature. What do I get? A well done burger someone was mad and wanted to take it out on the customer. What a shame.

Next item. I also ordered the cheddar cheese fries with some bacon added to it. They completely forgot the order and when it came out it had a completely different type of cheese. It was some spicy queso cheese sauce with bacon. When I went to the counter to ask, the cook gave some snarky attitude with her question: what’s wrong with the fries?? The end result here is apparently the menu changed and cheddar cheese is no longer an option. If this is true, then why do all 3 sources of their menu not reflect this change??

On the flip side, there was one young lady who had the nicest attitude of them all and should be the one to train the rest on customer service.

The milkshake was pretty good and the atmosphere was great!

Sadly, we won’t be coming back again.

Awesome burger and pickle bar.

Fries are on point and the onion rings are awesome.

Dog friendly on the patio is a huge plus!
I am a bit of a burger snob and these are top notch. We are in town for a few weeks and will be going back here again for sure!! Highly recommend

Loooove Twisted Root and have frequented multiple locations for many years. This is visit three to the Athens location, and I have been left disappointed by the food twice. It is a simple matter of over-cooking the burgers. TR burgers are best when no more than a juicy medium, but the cooks here seem to push it to medium-well or well-done, leaving the patties dry and less flavorful. The sides are fantastic (Choose the onion strings over the fries–you’ll thank me!), the staff friendly and helpful. The burgers just need to be better.

Oh, and no burger of the month? What gives?
