A truly lovely dining experience. The setting is beautiful, with sweeping views over the bay that immediately set the tone for a relaxed and memorable evening.
The Italian menu is fantastic and confidently executed, supported by a thoughtfully curated wine list. We started with the white lamb ragù, which was rich, succulent, and deeply satisfying. The venison was a standout on the menu — perfectly cooked and full of flavour.
Dessert was a surprise and a delight: pannacotta flavoured with mānuka honey and citrus — playful, refreshing, and a clever finish to the meal.
Service was warm and attentive throughout. Great food, great service, and a great overall experience. Highly recommended.

Absolutely fantastic experience! We showed up without a booking and they were able to accommodate us (on a table outside watching the sunset). Service was great, our waiting was very polite and attentive. Food was incredible, more worthy than a 4.5 star rating. We had the white ragu pasta, the Gnocchi and rolled pork belly. All very tasty and well priced.

We had an amazing meal – focaccia with three pestos a delightful burratatina, lamba rague primi and a fennel and orange salad, topped off with a delightful manuka honey panna cotta. All of it was delightful and the service exceptional. A memorable meal.

Stunning location, fabulous service and exceptional fish. I am not usually one to order fish and it was my intention to indulge in a pasta this evening but when the FOD was Sole – it’s my favourite – we both ordered! It was sensational – perfection in every aspect. We are so happy that the best meal of our stay in NZ was here at Gables. We loved our stay in Russell and this just capped off a wonderful experience.

Had a fantastic experience at The Gables. The food was great, but what truly made the night special was Lauren’s outstanding service. Warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming — she turned a good dinner into an unforgettable one.
Highly recommend, and definitely ask for Lauren if you can!

Wonderful! My husband and I had returned for dinner here tonight after having a taster for the delicious food after an impromptu late afternoon seating on the outdoor tables. We are so glad we decided to come back. The market fish of the day (snapper) was one of the most delicious, fresh and buttery fish dishes I’ve ever had. I recommend pairing it with the cos lettuce salad and the mouth watering crispy roast potatoes – yum! Other stand out dishes were the bruschetta and the genius combination of lemon and pistachio for the canoli with the incredible zesty sorbet. Service was very friendly and prompt and the atmosphere was enchanting, especially watching the sunset over the bay through the beautiful French windows. Stunning!

Imagine having a pre-wedding dinner booked for 50 people from all over the world – and with an hour and a half to go there’s a power cut across Northland!! Well that was us last week. Michael Tully kept us informed – walked down to meet us to look at alternatives – and was clearly very stressed but his focus was on ensuring we had a great evening – and then the power came back on about 10 minutes before we were going to have to make a decision … which was epic!! we were able to have the most fabulous night – the food was perfect – all delicious (my personal favourite was the gnocchi) – the whole fish, the bruschetta, the beef ragu – all the vegetarian food too – all just perfect. The drinks flowed, the service was outstanding. Turned into an absolutely wonderful night – thanks Michael and the Gables!! (all you might see on the photo is empty plates).

Fantastic location! Was there at the end of Sep from Aus, great weather on Friday, miserable on Saturday, BUT….. We took a gloomy ride to Russell from Paihia, as we had booked the wine tasting and found we were the only shows on a wet night. Michael was terrific, said he would do the tasting for the 2 of us and showed some awesome local wines. Being a wine collector for 45 years, his choices, you could not fault. Stayed for dinner and the Whole Lemon Sole was amazing, actually all the food was 5 star including the lunch the previous day. Highly recommend, you cannot beat the location or food, hats off to the chef! (who had just ducked across to Paihia for weight training but back to cook an awesome meal) All round 5 star place!

It’s located on the other end of the Strand. Extremely relaxing to look out at the wharf. The food was perfect, the two of us shared a starter and one main and one dessert each. The portion was good for lunch. Keen to try other dishes on the menu next time.

We had a surprising meal here 4 years ago (excellent Italian flavours) and after reading reviews we were keen to return. Lovely service and that fabulous view of course makes it a drawcard and it was busy the evening we went.
The not so positives:
V average oysters..some very small that we feel should not have been served to us and maybe put on a chowder or fritters.
Frittomisto was beautifully cooked and light but a very small portion. I can’t imagine that being served in Italy!
The sole was just outstanding and v v generous.. the server should have told us how big it as we could have shared it. The white lamb fettuccine was not great.. it was too oily and the flavours off..maybe just a bad choice for us.
The side of veges was again swimming in oil and we couldn’t eat all of them.. the sole also was swimming in butter.
Our cocktails were ok-but the local rose was acidic and we regretted ordering a bottle.
All in all a mixed bag for us.
