We adore 5 Star Thai! We’ve been here many times over the past few years. It’s by far the best Thai food in the region and even better than the places on the Illinois side too. We’ve never had a bad dish here! The owner is very personable and takes time to talk to you when he’s there. Can’t wait to come back!

First off the food is fine. Falls short but is pretty much like other Thai restaurants. Service was good. The price is where I have problems. Charges are not transparent. Everything on the menu costs more than what it says on the menu. Massamon curry $12, w/beef + $3, $15 in total, but you will be charged $13.52, w/beef $3.12, $16.64 in total. Where did the additional charges come from? This was even before I was paying with a card. I did tip decently, I don’t blame the wait staff. I’ve been here before and haven’t noticed these additional charges. I didn’t notice these charges until I was home, so that’s on me. I’m hesitant to go back now and eat there, not knowing what I am actually paying. If you are thinking about going there please go knowing that there is a good chance of paying more than you expected.

The food was so good. It was everything we were hoping for when we decided to come here today. This review has a vegan bent.

Most of their entrees can be adapted to being vegan, besides some of the salads, per our server, who I suspect is an owner…? And this is something we really appreciate. They have a lot of things labeled vegan on the menu but you can assume this applies to most items, “just let us know.”

Further, everyone seemed happy. The employees were all friendly. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. It’s also a place welcoming to families. It was just me and my girlfriend, but two other tables had small children. Relatedly, they have a small store that has candy and such.

This is going to sound weird but it’s true. The water was so cold and refreshing.

Beyond the water, the food was served quickly following our orders, less than 10 minutes for sure. Also, everything tasted like it was literally just taken off of a stove.

We bought the Pineapple Cashew Fried Rice with fried tofu, the Massamon Curry with fried tofu, and the Guay Chai. We love fried tofu and being able to add that to both main dishes was like xmas. The Guay Chai seemed fresh, hot and soft, and the dipping sauce (not sure what it was) was sweet and had a thick consistency.

The portions were substantial, the pricing was more than reasonable, and the food was amazing. We brought home enough food for dinner tonight, we went early evening, and maybe breakfast tomorrow?

Note: The picture is after we had been eating some and does not include the additional rice or the Guay Chai.

Out of the way place for Thai food and limited grocery. I can not lie, I was drawn here in hopes of a good grocery selection. They do have basic needs for Thai cooking, but I was hoping to find some freas holy basil, and they do not have any. With that note, I ordered Pad Kra Pao to eat and was a bit disappointed. Kra Pao IS holy basil, which is different from Thai basil. If you don’t have the main ingredient, why call it Kra Pao? Otherwise, the meal was good, and since i asked for Thai hot, it was spicy. My wife was also a bit let down from her expectations with her Yum Won Sen since she told them she was from Thailand and wanted it to taste authentic.

Great place, five of five dishes were great. I’ll be back. Try the Tiger Cry it was very nice and a lot to eat, they do say it’s for two! I found it was just right for one. See the new photos.

Stopped in again today for lunch drunken noodles with Beef. Chicken satay, and finished with Thai Custard. All tasted great!

I was back today for lunch, I had Tiger Cry. Medium Rare sliced tender and juicy steak with a Tiger Cry sauce That’s a little sweet and also has some spice in it too. Super tasty and a little spicey too. It really works well with the sliced steak.

Sad to say, but this is by far the worst Thai food I’ve had in my 50+ years, and I’m not saying this to be mean. Today, my wife and I decided to try a new Thai restaurant for noodles. We love places like Wu’s House, Asparagus, and Spice Thai, so we found this spot on Google and ordered Drunken Noodles with chicken, Pad See Ew with beef, and egg rolls.

Let me get straight to the point. As soon as she got home, my wife tasted the food and immediately said it wasn’t good—but she let me be the judge. I took a bite of each dish, followed by the egg roll (which I had to spit out).

The Pad See Ew was completely off—missing all the usual flavors and elements, with a rubbery texture to the meat. The Drunken Noodles were, well, sober. They looked pale and, while not outright disgusting, had almost no flavor. It was like eating plain ramen noodles without the seasoning packet. The egg roll was soggy, flavorless, and tasted freezer-burned—I couldn’t even swallow it.

I was extremely disappointed. Before writing this review, I called the restaurant to speak with a manager. Instead, the chef answered. After I explained my concerns, he refused to let me speak to a manager and insisted his food was good. I tried to explain that, as the chef, he’s naturally biased, but he just wanted to argue rather than offer a solution.

I remained as polite as possible, telling him the food was simply bad. He apologized, which is a start, but at the end of the day, I spent my hard-earned money on food that went straight to the trash. Times are tough, and when you pay for something, you should get quality. I’ll be calling again until I speak with someone other than the cook—who, frankly, can’t cook.

Oh. When I asked him if he knew ‘B’, the owner of Spice, he said yeah. I asked if he ever tried his food? He paused then said he had. His slight to Spice was “I don’t use msg”. Spice is 100 times better than his stuff with or without msg.

I’ve been going here for years and I’ve had Thai food from a number of spots all along the east coast and south. This one the few spots in Northwest Indiana that actually tastes like authentic Thai food.

I personally like the Basil Fried Rice and Curry Fried Rice.
