Established in 2008, China Red Restaurant strives to offer authentic Szechuan cuisine in the heart of Sheffield. Traditionally trained chefs turn fresh ingredients into authentic speciality dishes that rival those offered in China.The restaurant offers ample seating to accommodate anyone from couples to large parties. We came for lunch last Thursday at 12pm and the restaurant was quite empty. Everything looked good organising and clean. We ordered “mini hotpot” which was over £20 but the portion was not really big.
Foods were pretty nice. But we felt annoyed with their service cause even we were group of 4 and that was noy busy hour at all, 2 waitresses just stood and saw us sometimes, then we asked for some spoons, and it was so ridiculous when one lady brought to us only 1 spoon, and we kept asking for 3 more but she still brought 1 and ignored us then with a unhappy face.

I never like to leave poor reviews as this is someone’s livelihood but I feel I have to share my poor experience after being led to believe that this restaurant was exceptional. It is, but for the wrong reasons.
I went on a Monday lunchtime so the place was virtually empty. No problem with that. We received the menu – its extensive and not particularly cheap. We then asked if there was a (cheaper) lunchtime menu and lo, one miraculously appeared. Then we wait and wait until we have to summon the inattentive waitress to give our order. Waitress is unengaging and verging on impolite but that might have been a language problem. And then we wait a bit more despite being only one of two tables. Then the food finally comes. Spring roll starter. Pre made of course and surely hard to mess up? Well you can. Overcooked, hard and dry with nearly no filling. Then the sweet and sour pork. I think there was pork in there somewhere but it was mainly crispy batter. Sauce was an msg special. We paid with a greasy (and bitter) taste on our mouth. £20 for a miserable meal plus a pint. And they have the gall to add service to the bill. A thoroughly miserable experience.

I recently visited China Red, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. The flavors were authentic, the portions generous, and everything tasted freshly prepared. I especially loved the Fried Diced Chicken with dried chilies perfectly spicy with a great mix of crunch and tenderness. The “ Yuxiang” Chicken were juicy and flavorful, and the gongpo chicken had just the right balance.
The staff was friendly and attentive, and the food came out quickly. The ambiance was cozy yet modern—great for both casual dinners and special nights out.
Highly recommend if you’re craving real Chinese food that’s both satisfying and comforting. Will definitely be coming back!

That was our first experience in China Red and we will definitely come again!
We’ve ordered king prawns in sweet and sour sauce, chicken with cashews and noodles with bean sprouts – that was too much for the two of us but we managed to finish the meal.
Thank you for the delicious meals and clean atmosphere! Even toilets were freshly cleaned and that was pleasant to have a dinner out in your restaurant

We booked a party of 16 and we seated at two table of 8. We told the restaurant ahead of time the party were all vegan and were told no problem.
We ordered our food and again said we wanted it all vegan.
One table of 8 had eaten and paid for their food before the second table.of 8 had been served their food.
They served two bowls of hot and spicy soup which contained prawns so not vegan.
Once the rest of the food arrived it was ok. Nothing special and certainly not worth waiting nearly 2 hours for.
Mixed vegetables in garlic, for example, was a plate of wet mushy Chinese cabbage for £11.50
From a vegan perspective, over priced food and a risky place to eat as they do not understand the terms vegan.
Very disappointed and will not be going again.

Ordered the crispy shredded beef it was £16 for that one dish and bought the rice and sides separately. I was very disappointed that the shredded beef had no beef in there. It was just crispy pieces of batter with no meat inside which I was disgusted by.

What a find! We were so lucky to stumble upon this absolute gem of a restaurant. We were in Sheffield for the week and ended up eating at China Red’s over 5 times during our stay, that’s how good it is!
The food is out of this world. Every order was delicious, the beef with black bean sauce was hands down the best I’ve had.
I truly cannot recommend this place highly enough. If you’re in Sheffield and looking for an unforgettable meal, you have to go here.
