This was my first time visiting, and I was pleasantly surprised. The place is a little dated, but it appeared clean. I ordered the fried fish dinner, and it was good. My friends had steak and burgers, and they were also pleased with their food selection.

I’ve been here many times before but was in the mood for a burger and thought this would be a great place. The parking lot was quite full but it was a Friday before a Notre Dame home game so that was to be expected plus I know many people meet friends there and share tables so I went in to see what the wait time was. I got right in and seated in a booth in the corner. I was surprised that there were a couple other tables open. As I was sitting down the server came for my drink order to which I replied Amaretto and diet. She wrinkled her nose and said they didn’t carry amaretto even though it was a common request. I was surprised and ordered an unsweetened tea instead.
I looked over the menu and was still thinking Burger. The server brought my ice tea and asked if I wanted to hear the specials. I said yes and she told me Chicken Marcella with baked potato but she leaned in and said she didn’t recommend it as several customers said it was dry. There was also prime rib and she also told me the soups of the night.
I told her I’d just have the mushroom and swiss with fries. She asked how I wanted it cooked to which I replied medium rare. She then asked if I wanted crackers and cheese which I remembered from before and eagerly agreed! Bar cheese and assorted crackers, yum!
She brought the crackers and cheese and the burger about 10 minutes later. I ate the crackers and nibbled on the fries. I cut the burger in half and finished the fries. I could see there was gravy on the burger which I wasn’t expecting.
I tried picking up the burger and got the first bite in and realized the bun was so soggy that there was no way I could eat it the normal way.
I proceeded to use my fork to cut it up and eat it. The taste was alright. Red in the middle as requested. I was expecting mushrooms and cheese where I could add mustard and ketchup but the gravy put an end to that.
I will commend the server for refreshing my tea several times and checked back to see how I was doing.
When I finished she came by to offer dessert choices to which I declined. She dropped my check off at the table and picked up my card. The total was $17.11 before tip. I think for a burger the next time, I will go elsewhere. I will say, there food in the past has been good. They have changed the menu and prices. Typically they would have soup and salad included with the meal but now there have both as options with seperate pricing.

Portion sizes were excellent, half of the deep fried mushrooms had no batter on them. Mushroom swiss burger was ok, comparable to Hardee’s. My daughter said her Latern burger meat (plain 1/2 lb with everything except onion on it) had no flavor. Really slow service, to busy hanging out with there other server. Had to wait forever for another beer. Place was dead, only 1 other table occupied at 6:15 on a Monday evening. Really disappointed.

For years, I had driven past this restaurant in the morning saying to myself I wanted to try it, so tonight I took the family and tried it and loved it. Unlike Nick’s, it’s not either soup or salad. You get both with your meal. We ate like kings. A beautiful chopped steak and mashed potatoes. You even get cheese and crackers to start off with. Our waitress was awesome, too. The best part you won’t lose your wallet there. Very reasonable for what you get. You won’t leave there hungry. They even have things like frog legs but it’s not my thing.

Great place to dine. Friendly cool service, very attentive and listens. Full course meal, from appetizer to salad, then soup, then meal, like holy moly, we loved that, that’s what we love about dining out. We sat outside and ate our dinner, it may be loud for some people with the traffic, but we were so focused on our date night, and our meal, my Papi forgot he ordered mushroom and onion with his steak. We’d definitely be back again.

This is not the place for a quickie, definitely not a fast food joint. Expect to pay a higher price for better quality and service.
