Sit at the bar if you’re a party of 2 for more space and a fun experience. Brandon was awesome!
Reservation was easy to come by since the restaurant is so big. The 30 ft ceiling lends to extremely noisy interior. Luckily, there weren’t that many tables because it was already loud. We also didn’t feel that the decor matched the menu. I know it is suppose to be modern cuisine but the menu items were pretty classic French.
We didn’t know what to expect, except that it was southern French cuisine. My partner who is French was excited to find menu items that brought back his childhood in the cantine, like the Brandade. There were offerings like pissaladière that brought me back to my years in Nice.
We ordered the Brandade, the poulet grillé and the pétrole sole. The brandade was good, although the mashed potatoes could have been finer. The grilled chicken breast was a huge disappointment. The breast of chicken was pounded to a thin steak and covered with frisée lettuce and cherry tomatoes. The chicken was very over-cooked. My sole was pretty good but also over-cooked.
All and all, it felt forced. The entrees were $30-40 a plate so we expected better at this price.
Sadly, we won’t be returning.
I also felt the restaurant lacked professionalism as almost everyone was wearing their street clothes and there was no uniform or anything to identify a staff member that works there. I have lived in Oakland for 12 years and the experience was unlike any other restaurant I’ve been to in the Bay area.
Based on their prices and attitude I felt this was unacceptable and will not be returning.
* Beautiful gorgeous space.
* We loved walking in on Sunday afternoon and getting seated immediately. The hostess was nice and friendly.
* We loved all the different cocktails and mocktails we got. They were all done beautifully and with some interesting twists.
Cons
* There were 2 things that were disappointing though. We saw Pommes Lyonnaise on the menu and were excited about that, because you don’t see that everyday. We were expecting thinly sliced pan-fried potatos with onions and parsley. But what we got looked more like regular roasted potatoes cut in cubes. I wish they had just named them ‘Roasted potatoes’ on the menu.
* The second thing was that we ordered the eggs Benedict, which ended up coming with the same exact potatoes. We wished that when we ordered them together, the server had given us a heads up that they were the same potatoes, since it wasn’t written on the menu. (And then we wouldn’t have ordered them.)
We would still come back though, because everyone was very nice and the space and cocktails were so nice. Hopefully they’ll read through some of the reviews and iron out the kinks!
