Barrel & Boar, originally known as Holy Smoke BBQ, has been a staple in the Columbus, Ohio, area since its inception in 1983. The restaurant’s initial focus was on providing high-quality smoked meats and traditional BBQ fare. Over the years, it has expanded to multiple locations, including Gahanna and the North Market in Columbus.
The Gahanna location, established in 2016, is particularly notable for its beautiful setting in the Creekside development, offering a rustic yet warm ambiance for enjoying southern cuisine paired with local craft beers and cocktails. The North Market location, our longest standing location, has been serving up Ohio BBQ countertop style to the bustling market crowd for over 15 years.

This was my first time going to Barrel and Boar, and I can say I was thoroughly pleased with my experience. I got the beef brisket sandwich, which came with lettuce and tomatoes, which I thought was a little unusual. However, they must know something because the combination of the three tasted really good. The Brisket was fantastic by itself and the sauce that it comes with was even better. I got the baked beans and potato salad as my sides both of which were phenomenal. I will be visiting barrel and boar again on my next visit to North market!

This BBQ was straight-up sexy. The pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches were dripping with flavor, messy in the best way, and absolutely irresistible. The pulled chicken bowl? A total tease — smoky, saucy, and hitting all the right spots.
The spices had just the right kick, the sauces were bold and seductive, and the sides played their part perfectly. Add in the super friendly staff and you’ve got a place that knows how to satisfy.
Honestly, this is the kind of BBQ that makes you want to lick your fingers clean and then go back for more. Naughty, saucy, and oh-so-good.

I recently dined at this restaurant and had an excellent experience from start to finish. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal. The menu featured a variety of appealing dishes, and the food I ordered was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Each bite showed attention to detail and quality ingredients. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and quick to assist with anything I needed. Service was prompt without feeling rushed. Overall, the combination of delicious food, pleasant atmosphere, and great service made this restaurant a standout choice for a satisfying dining experience.

Update: went in today January 17, 2026 around 2pm… there was only one piece of brisket out, it was dried out, hardly no sides available, and the sausages were burnt. This place needs a serious upgrade on whoever is cooking the food here.
My pictures are from the October visit, they definitely didnt have any food out worth taking a picture of today. I wanted to take a picture of the empty hot plates which should have been populated with food, but it was crowded at the restaurant across from here.
October 2025: We spent $37 on one meal which was $17 and we asked for a side of brisket…they gave us 2 slices, I don’t understand how 2 small slices of brisket was $20. The meal comes with 2 sides, I asked for greens and cornbread. The meat was super dry and hardly no flavor. Had to ask for extra seasoning on the meat and it didn’t make it better. Asked for sides of sauce and I don’t like how they fill the cups to less than half. This is the 5th time we’ve come and they finally had meat but everything was dried out with no flavor. I like the greens but my husband didnt. Definitely not our favorite BBQ location.

I thought I was gonna be disappointed. Got here at 5 and a lot of the sides looked dried out. Ordered the Burnt Ends for $12 and a side of Brussels sprouts for $5. Ends were bangin!! Such tasty flavor! I may have gotten skimped a little since it was the last. Sprouts also so good. If they can make dried out old food taste this good, I’ll be back when it’s fresh!!

This is a popular place, with reason: the food is delicious and the portions are great. My teenage son had the macaroni and cheese with pork, while I had the BBQ bowl with smoked pork, plus the cornbread. Note that the cornbread is cold and on the sweet side and served along with butter. I used their sweet and smoky sauce, too, which was delicious. My bowl had rice, a variety of high quality beans, and Brussels sprouts, along with the meat; it was incredibly hearty. We ate our food in the dining room upstairs, which was a very nice space.

Very busy night for dinner but we enjoyed our meal. The service was a tad slow but again lots of people in the place so you know it has quality food! Each meal our group had was delicious!

The service was amazing, the people are friendly. We went there because we are from Texas and miss bbq, and the brisket, chicken, links are exactly like we get back home! The prices are more than fair, and the service from Cynthia and Deante really make the experience wonderful I think it’s.
