I had lunch with my sister for her birthday. Again, just opened in the former Fatted Calf location. At this time, there was no restaurant decor, 100% acoustic and very loud (more so than normal) once people started coming in. I’m certain this will change and improve as they settle in.
I ordered the brisket and ribs plate with barbecue beans and a side salad. My understanding is this restaurant has been established for a while and moved from Sachse to Rockwall.
-The brisket was good, not great. Very little smoke ring and next to no bark. Cut very thin.
-The ribs came later. They looked great. It’s my understanding that “competition style ribs” are not “fall off the bone” ribs. As you can see in the photos, before, and after… There was almost no meat on those ribs, all bone. Luck of the draw perhaps? If so, I still feel like I got the short end of the stick on the ribs.
-The beans were good, but I’m anticipating that these were Bush Beans.
-The salad was great! The jalapeño ranch was perfect with it!
-My sister let me try her green beans. I thought they were really good flavored and I think had some bacon in it.
-The roll was good
-The sauce tasted like sweet baby rays to me, not that there’s anything wrong with SBR, but I like to see restaurants like this with their own sauce (I could be wrong).
-I wanted turkey, but they didn’t have any.
Again, I’ll be trying this place again, but will likely be getting something different.
Boss lady and I came in after the lunch rush. Only three other tables had customers. I ordered the 205 Plate with (what was to be fatty, not. It was cold and dry) brisket and the spicy sausage, which was delicious! My sides were green beans (with bacon) and fried okra…both very tasty.
She had their special flat iron steak, cooked medium rare (always!) with salad and and fries (which need to be done more). Her steak was so tender and cooked perfectly!
Dessert was their sampler. With a double order of banana pudding, a bread pudding and a chocolate cake. The best thing was the bread pudding but it needs a warm sauce on it. The others were just Ok.
Overall, a good meal and experience. We’ll be back to try something different.
My wife and son were in a separate vehicle from me last night, and we both met up in downtown and parked near each other. All of us were hungry, but we didn’t know what sounded good.
Knowing how crowded some of the favorites downtown would be, we decided to go walkabout and see where we could get in to grab a seat quickly. Actually, scratch that, Crystal decided to shop at Groovy’s first.
Directly next door was the old location that the Fatted Calf & Old Timers, once occupied. Back in September 2022 it became Community BBQ. I had personally stopped in for a lunch back in October and enjoyed it.
This is not your typical BBQ joint. You don’t stand in line and order, you are served at a table, similar to Sideways at the Harbor. They aren’t brand new, this is actually a transplant restaurant from Sachse, where they had prior success.
There are plenty of items on the menu as shown, and they serve beer & wine as well. I believe there are future plans for liquor. There’s already the bar for it.
Once we walked inside we were immediately greeted, and offered to sit in the back room as the front area was full and large party was soon to arrive. It was up front we noticed the meat market (which is open on Saturday’s).
We were familiar with the back room as we had sat back here for brunch when it was Fatted Calf. They have however reconstructed the hallway so that you no longer awkwardly walk through the hot kitchen to get there.
We had the room to ourselves for the entirety of our dinner, which was really cozy. We inquired and found that you can reserve / rent the back room for events and such. Former guests include the Rockwall Chamber of Commerce & the Rockwallian Women’s Group, we were told.
A sign out front (only good for last night), mentioned buy 1 steak get 2nd half off. So steaks it is. Wife had the Filet and the guy that pays had the Ribeye. Little one had the fresh cut chicken nuggets.
Our steaks included 2 sides, and we both had salads. Her side was green beans and mine was the okra. Our son had the Mac & Cheese. We all shared all of our orders with each other to sample everything. For an appetizer we had onion rings, and for dessert we had the bread pudding.
Carrie, our server / manager, gave us her full attention ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. And the owner even came out to discuss our steaks and how they’ll be cooked / served. We still have half our steaks and sides for leftovers today!
I asked about the bareness on the walls, and was told that soon the Mint Julep would partner in decorating and adorning with paintings that are available to purchase!
It was also mentioned that they’re looking at the possibilities that they’ll bring back a familiar favorite to the location – BRUNCH!
Lastly it was mentioned that part of their name is what they do and give back to the community. They provide food to the pantry Rockwall Helping Hands, including meat!
Don’t sleep on this place, and give them a shot. We are glad that we did.
*** the first time I went and had brisket, it was great also ***
Our server was attentive and made recommendations when asked. Very happy with our experience and will be back. P.S. the mud pie was amazing!
