Delicious, fresh, beyond my expectation. A family member brought us here so he’s a regular. The service was top notch. The chef’s selection for omakase boat was lavish and deliable, fish / seafood was fresh- fresh!
Atmosphere was relaxing, small family owned restaurant with the family present. There is sushi bar seating, booths, tables, a table for 8ish is available but I recommend reservations if you are a larger group or a weekend.
Ginger dressing was delicious- light and enjoyable. Black cod – superb. Fried flounder light and flaky.
This is an authentic Japanese restaurant so don’t expect a chain / franchise type experience.
Parking was plenty, ease access.
Every piece of sushi in the Omakase menu is phenomenal at the highest quality and freshness. It includes premium or seasonal items such as Otoro (fatty tuna), Chutoro (medium fatty tuna), Aji, Kanpachi (baby Hamachi), Sanma, Uni, Iwashi (sardine). Most items in the Omakase menu are directly from Japan. Otoro (fatty tuna) is lightly torched, which enhanced the flavor from the fish oil. The chef also generously put minced toro on top of the otoro sushi. It is so flavorful and melt in the mouth. The sea bream and saury from Japan are also light torched. We love them.
The most impressive piece is saury (sanma or 秋刀魚). It is the one with the beautiful cross-hatched knife work and is next to the king salmon. The best season for raw saury is now from September to November because of its highest fat content and flavor. It is very rare to see restaurants to serve saury sushi or sashimi when it is not in season. So, once we saw that on the menu, we immediately order it without hesitation. It is really the best sushi restaurant in Ohio.
About a decade ago, I happily recommended this place as the best Japanese restaurant in Ohio, even telling people that it’s worth the long drive. Now, I will never speak of this place after a recent experience.
Upon entering, we were seated immediately and given 10 separate pages of unorganized menu. As we scramble through the menu, the waitress consistently walked and told us that we must try the seasonal special every minute. We ended up ordering seasonal fish tempura, few pieces of sushi, and tempura dinner.
The seasonal fish tempura was alright, but tasted muddy and also seasoning salt that came with was clearly a kobucha powder. Then sushis came out, which some of them were fantastic, until I ate yellowtail- it had huge bone that it almost choked me. I really should have complained to whoever prepared it at that moment.
Then, we waited additional 40 minutes for tempura dinner. We almost thought that they forgot about our order. When they finally came out, tempura was improperly drained and very much a soggy mess. The tempura dipping sauce was a hot water and basically forgot any seasoning.
Seriously, the food was so inconsistent with its quality that I thought they were doing it on purpose.
What happened to the chief chef? I remember about a decade ago, he was there making sushi behind the counter, checking the quality of food, and talking to long time customers. As the year went on by, he continuously looked exhausted and overworked which correlated with the quality of food. Now, after the relocation, he is no longer to be seen. The price have raised significantly while the food quality have plummeted down.
Unless you have a way to connect to the chief chef and be able to guarantee the quality, I highly DO NOT recommend using this restaurant for any important business dinner. It leaves such a negative impact on your guest.
As a long time fan of this place- I left with a huge disappointment and sadness. I’m never coming back to this place.
Great selection, incredible offerings that set them apart from the competition, and food is good. Not mind-blowing by any means. However, If the food was priced appropriately I’d for sure come back. The pricing is just not sustainable and in fact absurd for Cincinnati, OH. Spent $168 for two people. Just crazy. I’d rather go to Boca where the food is actually insane and the ambience and service is equally as impressive.
Run by an older Japanese couple who are as charming as they are dedicated, this place quietly delivers the kind of food you don’t expect to find in Ohio—like an actual Omakase menu that doesn’t just cater to crunchy rolls and cream cheese cravings.
I wish the menu were tighter—more focused, less sprawling. But hey, I get it. You’ve got to keep the locals happy. Let’s just say it caters to… Midwestern sensibilities.
Still, if you’re looking for the real thing—not fried, not smothered, not sweet—Ando is a rare gem in a land of imitation crab.
