SLOW COOKING, REAL FOOD At l’escargot bleu we cook everything from scratch, slowly. Doing so ensures the natural flavours and textures of the ingredients we so carefully source are presented to you at their very best. We personally know the people who catch, raise, grow and harvest every ingredient we cook with. As well as our street-level restaurant, we have a beautiful wine bar on the lower ground floor. Perfect for a drink before or after a meal, or just for wine and nibbles.

Upbeat, French bistro with white walls and posters for a classic French menu using local produce.

Dined at L’Escargot Bleu early Saturday evening for a two-course dinner — our favourite French restaurant and consistently excellent.

We started with the grilled snails and steak tartare with side salad, both generously portioned and ideal for sharing. The snails were rich in garlic butter, and the tartare was fresh, beautifully balanced, and tailored to your preferred spice level.

For mains, the slow-braised Beef Bourguignon was melt-in-the-mouth tender and the ribeye steak was perfectly seared, juicy, and full of character.

The Montaigne St Emilion — smooth with dark berry notes and soft tannins — paired seamlessly with the beef dishes. While there’s no alcohol-free wine, alcohol-free beer is available.

Reservations are recommended, with a credit card required to secure the booking (no-show fee may apply).

Authentic, comforting, and reliably impressive — it never disappoints. ✨

We had a wonderful evening here at the weekend. We were visiting from down south and had seen L’escargot reviewed on Instagram and decided to book in.
We’re so glad that we did as it was a lovely evening. It’s typically bistro cosy, with a warm atmosphere and the people who run this obviously care and take such pride in their food and drink. I’m just so sorry that our french is so rusty as we would have loved to have conversed with you in french too.
Please try this restaurant if you want a french bistro/restaurant experience although go hungry as you’re well looked after!

I stumbled in here, walking around Scotland. It is absolutely the most decorative crunch fruit I’ve ever had personal small family run delicious. Atmosphere is spectacular. I can’t tell you I have a snails which was better than I’ve ever had in France and a steak that was cooked to perfection at the gave me that wine lecture and helped me pick out the best wine. Absolutely lovely you must come here.

Quite simply, one of the best meals I have ever had, anywhere. The food was amazing, properly delicious and clearly cooked with love. The service was had a lovely touch of friendly informality but still perfectly precise. And the vibe is comfortable and warming. Everything is in perfect balance. Quite simply, if I had to choose to eat my last meal somewhere, it would be here. I live in London but I will be back. Just not soon enough…

Old time classics – absolutely love coming back to this place, which never disappoints.

Staff are friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable whether it’s food or wines. Try throwing in a French word here and then – they’ll play along.

Genuine cooking bursting with flavours. Don’t be afraid to try some of the daily specials. Last time we tried leek salad – which had herbs and leek grown at their own garden – which made for an amazing starter full of flavour yet very light. Personally, I love the snails and then beef tartar which is prepared at the table and to your liking.

We came here for an anniversary meal and it was fabulous, one of the best meals in a long long time. All dishes tasted incredible, the wines were great and the service really helpful with some great recommendations. Worth every pound. Thank you for a special meal, we will definitely be back again.

My best meal this year and I go to a lot of restaurants. Especially recommend the tartare, the beauf boullione and the chocolate desert, not from this world!

This is one of our favourite restaurants, and well worth the journey to Edinburgh. We ate here again last night. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and, as always, the food was superb. Service was both friendly and efficient. It’s a must visit if you’re looking to eat out in Edinburgh.

Great French food, pricy but worth it.

This one’s been on the wishlist for a while, as it’s really popular and we had to book well in advance, but so glad we finally managed to try it out, it was great.

We went for the full three course meal, which came to £60 per person, which is fairly expensive, but not too crazy and I’d say the quality lived up to the expectations.

I had,
fish and crab soup to start, it was rich without being heavy 8/10
lobster (it was on special at no extra cost!) for mains was excellent. I went to town on that bad boy, my mother would not have approved of my table manners but I got every ounce of flavour of that thing, the herbs and vegetables gave it a freshness that balanced the butter, 8/10
for dessert I had the chocolate nemesis which was absolutely phenomenal, light but rich with a depth of flavour you won’t get anywhere else, 10/10

Wife had,
escargot for starters, classic dish they’re famous for, no shells to worry about, and enough butter and garlic to kill a horse, 9/10
slow cooked beef for mains, lovely and tender and rich, very filling 8/10
crème brulée for dessert, despite such a rich main course this didn’t feel too heavy, the cream was light and brulée was perfectly crisp, 9/10

As extras we also had,
bread and butter, complimentary before our starters, really good tangy sourdough taste, and they gave us extra when we asked for it, 9/10
mixed vegetables, at first I thought they were slightly overcooked, the broccoli being a bit on the soft side, but the rest were fine and the herbs and seasoning on them was very tasty, 8/10

Overall we had a fantastic experience, the wait staff made us feel so welcome, despite being so popular they didn’t rush us off our table immediately and we got a good 20-30 minutes extra to finish in a timely manner with a cup of tea.

I am appreciate that I finally visited here. I saved this place more than year, I think this one is best French restaurant in Edinburgh. First of all, £60pounds for 3 course is reasonable price. We enjoyed all starters, main menus and dessert. Especially I strongly recommend beef tartare for starter. We could pick the level of spicy, it was brilliant. For main course, they have special menu, we picked surf and turf. Lobster was amazing and pork was chewy, they were super delicious. Finally the dessert, we ordered 3 different things, but all great we can’t pick the best. All food menu was amazing.
