I like Pepe’s food but it’s always better to eat on site rather than takeout because it can become soggy. The area and aesthetic of this particular restaurant was not conducive for comfortable dining….in my opinion. I don’t live in Chicago anymore but seek out Pepe’s whenever I’m in town, unfortunately I can’t recommend this one even though the proprietor was welcoming and service was fast.

Went to this location earlier today (5/2/25). I haven’t been there since I was a child. The food used to be so so good, but now it’s really bland, but it was fresh. I got a 10 mini beef taco plate and a #6 combo (included two chicken tacos, a drink, and a small fry for around 11 bucks). I did not add any extras to my order. Mind you, my total is 23 dollars and some change, and the TAX was a couple more dollars, bringing it $25.90 RIGHT?? I take that much out (using Cashapp for this), the guy tells me it declined. Then, he turns his machine around so that I can tap it again….. and it turns out it was declined because he added himself a tip without my permission. Believe the reviews guys!!! This place has gotten so terrible.

The food at this location was absolutely disgusting! Been eating at Pepes more than 30 years and this is the only location that I’ve ever said was terrible. The tostado shells and tortilla chips were thin and stale. The beef had a weird taste like it was cooked with well water. And the cheese on my elotes smelled spoiled. Took it back inside and had the lady smell it and she said that’s just how the cheese smells! No it does not! Literally put both dinners in the garbage after tasting a small amount. Never again! If you eat here it must be because you don’t have transportation to go anywhere else!

Called in my order, arrived to pick up and pay. There was a guy in front of me picking up. He then proceed to ask for a run down of the order the guy gives him the total and then he wait how much if I take something off. He then proceed to call the people who ordered with him cause apparently someone didn’t pay enough. I’m like at this point can you assist me while this guy get it together. The server finally acknowledged me and I go my good and left. The steak tacos were bland had to use the hot sauce and eat the peppers to get any flavor. Not the same restaurants as it was back in the day. I won’t be back.

The stuffed nachos are delicious. A classic I used to get as a kid. The enchiladas were so fresh and hot. Delicious. Been coming to this specific one for some years. Glad they’re still making it.

I went this evening to buy 10 tacos. It was $22 in cost. I get my for and you give me 7 hot sauce packs that are like packaging the size of a ketchup pack. He told me I had to share the small packs. Also saying I have to split the small packs over 10 tacos. They made me pay for more little packs. This is horrible I will never go to this restaurant again. $22 and you cant get enough sauce. Never again
