This was a rather confusing and unorganized evening. We had reservations for 4:30 dinner before a 6pm jazz show. We arrived a half hour early and were seated promptly as we were the first ti be seated in a completely empty restaurant. Our waitress seemed new and unsure of many things but we placed an order for whiskey ginger ales and cheese curds. The drinks came weak and the cheese curds were delicious, at least the ones that were fried individually. 3/4 of the cheese curd order were one large fist sized clump, batter uncooked in the middle so we flagged our waitress down and returned the curds. She said she would “take care of it”. We never got a fresh batch of curds. Someone offered to clear our plates from the curds and I replied I wasn’t sure if we were done as the waitress hadn’t clearly communicated if we were getting replacement curds. The man seemed a little like a manager but made a face and shrugged, offered no follow up and left.
I had intended to order sliders from the happy hour menu (valid 4-6pm) which is where we found the cheese curds listed but were informed they were not serving from that menu.
The jazz group warmed up during dinner so we got to listen to that music overlapping the canned music the restaurant was playing.
We waited quite some time for our burger and flatbread. The burger was delicious, grilled medium – just right. The pear flatbread was just ok. Each little square had an entire round of fresh mozzarella on it, still a little squeaky and overpowered the rest of the flavors. The crust was chewy. I could barely taste the pear. Thankfully we got credit for the cheese curds, and humorously also didn’t get charged for the whiskey ginger ales.
Service took so long we barely finished dinner by 5:15, when the doors were supposed to open for the jazz concert. Email and website said concert doors would open 45 minutes before the show, but the man who had offered to clear our cheese curd plates (said he worked for “the building”) stood guard and insisted the doors opened at 5:30. Any questions by customers about wait staff offering to deliver food or drink in the venue were met with a grimace and a comment that he was military and a rule follower. A crowd began gathering in the restaurant because they arrived in time for the doors to open at 5:15, so he finally let everyone in at 5:25.
The next issue was getting our qr ticket codes read by the staff. No one could get their devices to work. Finally they quit trying to scan tickets and just showed us where our section was.
The confirmation email had said tables would be mixed groups, first come first serve, but seating was rows and rows of chairs except the very back. This should be communicated a little more clearly and time corrected in the confirmation email and website.
The concert itself was wonderful. Seats were wobbly and chairs crowded together. Aisles were too narrow to pass others comfortably.
Another note, when the early concertgoers are released, anyone who sits in the restaurant near the door in the winter will be mighty chilly as 300 people exit through the restaurant and a single open door right next to your table.
The servers were very kind and attentive .You can tell They enjoy what they do And had fun making our experience memorable.
The historic spanish architecture is very stunning. It was beautiful to see the starry night sky in the theater.
The service was also great they were fast and very responsible with our order, they made it feel very welcoming and explained parts of the menu as needed.
The building itself is such an eye opening experience, it feels like you were teleported to another time and place.
The good:
– The waitstaff and bartenders were amazing. Extremely friendly and fun. I can’t stress enough how great they were!
– The atmosphere was fantastic. It’s a small place, but very cute and a really nice place to spend an evening.
– My wife said the crab cakes were excellent!
The not so good:
– It took over a half hour for our jalapeno popper appetizer to arrive after ordering. I can look past this – restaurants are busy, mistakes happen, etc… but when they finally arrived there were two jalapeno poppers. Two. Both wrapped in flaccid bacon and a piece of dry flavorless duck.
– While the cocktails sounded interesting on the menu, they were watered down and made with fairly cheap tasting liquor
– Our burgers had great flavor, but were overcooked and dry
– Most frustratingly, at the end of our meal just before we went into the show, I asked if we could order a couple cocktails to bring in with us. ‘Of course!’ The cocktails came, we walked into the theater, and were promptly turned away because our cocktails were in glass containers, not plastic cups. Is this not something the waitstaff should be aware of? At this point I had enough and just left the cocktails at the entrance to the theater.
We will definitely be back to the theater for another show in the future, but we’re more likely to go to Beckett’s for $5 happy hour burgers and beers than return to the Uptown Lobby.
Ordered a Butter Burger. Bun was good but the bottom fell apart quickly. Patty was juicy and had good flavor. Sautéed mushrooms and onions hit the spot. The star was the spicy mayo, it really brought all the flavors together. What a mess after two bites, but didn’t care. Wasn’t expecting a burger this much above average here.. Enjoyed this one.
Fries were hot and had a good Truffle flavor if you like that.
Service was top notch. The bartender/server was friendly and courteous. Took car of us and recommended some great beverages!
