I took my date to Avalon and it could not have been a more positive experience! Dont let the exterior fool you, as you enter you are greeted by a spacious yet intimate interior. I waited a few minutes at the bar for my date to arrive and was very impressed with “Todd” who was extremely personable and attended to our every need throughout the evening. for my entree I ordered the Bacon Wrapped Grilled Filet Mignon & Demi Glace…. I honestly cant remember tasting a more tender steak! Avalon is now my favorite restaurant in Humboldt County!

This place was great on my previous visit on December 20 2011. This year for a company Christmas party we were first surprised by what was am attempt at “mood lightning” in the bathroom. Unfortunately this was a failed attempt to hide the fact the lightbulb was either burned out and no one had replaced it or that they have bad wiring and the place is a fire hazard.
The second strike came when I had ordered a whisky with coke. When I go to the Avalon I never drink well drinks and though it was an open bar I’m guessing that drink alone ran $8+. I’m not sure if they switched the soda line to their drink gun with ice tea, or sewage run off but I couldn’t finish my first drink due to the taste. I thought I had made a mistake but it turned out on my second, third, sixth drink that it still tasted like I shouldn’t drink it.
Now let me walk you through my 4 course meal.
The first course was crab cocktail, awesome! Aside from the bits of shell still in the cocktail.
The second course was a nice salad, not being the biggest salad fan I’ll leave this course alone due to the fact I don’t really eat salad ever.
The main course was a slab of raw steak. When I say raw steak I mean the slice I ended up consuming was maybe 75° to the touch and in a pool of blood. Later in the evening I saw the pink and purple flesh in the toilet since I feel this is what made me sick after getting back to my room for the night.
For dessert we had a chocolate pudding with either a dark chocolate stick or a white chocolate wafer in it, not bad but if you’re diabetic make sure you can handle the richness of this dish.
Overall I can accept these downfalls as I wasn’t paying the bill for this horrible experience.
What topped the cake though was when I witnessed a server eating in the kitchen. Being a 17 year veteran of the food industry I know this happens and is nothing new. This particular incident got me on the common sense end of it. She was eating a bite of food right next to where plates were being expedited to the guest. The guest being a restaurant full of managers for a food based business.
She got it to her mouth and the majority of it landed on the floor. My first thought was “how much does that happen and how much made it on the plates of the patrons?”
Overall I’m very disappointed with what happened to this once fine dining establishment over the course of a year.
Next year I’ll opt for an IHOP or Denny’s.
