Reviews
After some fresh gray painted interiors on the wood boards on the walls and the glass counter that sold T-shirts removed, everything else remains the same, including seating. However, the place looked “sterile” – lacking themes of any kind.
There are no longer same old faces we recognize but all new young waitress (in training?) under the new ownership.
Our 1st experience was clealrly 2-3 steps down from the poor taste and the service experience in comparison to the previous Smoke’n’bone’s operation.
The first word entering the place was this “awkward” vibe the workers showed. No welcoming or communicating skills whatsoever. They were unresponsive and totally distant. But, not rude. Alarmingly, none of them really knew about their own food on the menu! They truly had no idea of the tastes and No recommendation was given with the new side menu. BBQ meat choices are limited, too, and equally no recommendation was given although we now asked this young manager. He equally had no idea but just cited the entire BBQ menu back to us. How about some food and drink tasting before the opening the business? Who are the owners? (They own 7a deli sadwich store we heard later)
It is lack of both work experience of the young females and lack of restaurant training by the owners. The owners should be always present in the beginning to answer all the questions and deal with issues.
The food;
The BBQ meat was cooked underwhelmingly and showed no tender texture or juicy herbal season flavor, but just a superficial burnt smoke bitterness. The chicken was rather too fat and its skin was too thick and hard to chew, and little meat on the bones. The babyback we had was dry and has no flavor. At this point, we started to think any restaurant serving babybacks will be better than this BBQ specific restaurant.
The 2 side foods that used to come with the BBQ dishes (usually cornbread, coleslaw, or baked beans) at Smoke’n’bones is now all separately charged at $3.50 each(small) in a school canteen serving style. Corn pudding was a bit too sugary but tasted good.
The old Smoke’n’bone’s meat was always good and if the meat was not smoked to their perfection, the owner would recommend to us what else is the best for the night. In that way, we always had great dishes and left with big smiles, with big handshakes. Their Barbequed meat quality was much better than those selected restaurants at Boston Phantom Gourmet BBQ events.
But, these babyback and chicken we had at Sea Smoke BBQ are disappointment, below average, and it was a little overpriced for what we got and from the poor interaction.
We used to wait for Smoke’n’bones to open its door for the memorial weekend every Sumner for the start of the good times with our friends and neighbors. But, sadly, that good time is just in our memory. We truly miss him and the hard working staff!
Sea Smoke has a lot to catch up with to succeed and to live up to its old glory. There are lots of loyal fans like us out there to be entertained again.
We hope them to step up for a top A+ game!
My wife had the brisket sandwich and loved it. Very smokey. Support this place it’s great!
Also I like the new system better than the former cafeteria style. Bravo, guys!
