Service: Michael was especially helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. When I wanted wasabi, he asked if I would also like ginger and brought them to the table. When my daughter brought her own shark plate with shark chopsticks, he complimented her for them and she was far more comfortable using them than the provided dishware and felt welcomed accordingly. When my boyfriend brought in his own aged soy sauce, he tried it and they fell into discussions, including how he played an instrumental role in getting gluten-free soy sauce as a to go condiment option upon request. He and my boyfriend had a blast discussing soy sauces and other items, like seaweed.
There was another worker whose name I didn’t quite catch, but she did her best with a clear language barrier. She did successfully bring us the items we requested and Michael assisted when it seemed necessary. I appreciated her efforts and attentiveness. She, too, saw my daughter’s setup and complimented it as well. She was so glad to be so welcomed.
Atmosphere: It was cozy enough. It was clean and not overly crowded. We were seated near other people but it also seemed we were staggered upon arrival. This did seem to mean more people had opportunity to get assorted items. The pacing of the train was reasonable and I thought it was clever enough to have a display on the wall of per plate pricing. I do think they could have more descriptions on certain items, especially for allergy information (I learned “kani” means “crab” and, in the dish I was eating, it was verified to be imitation crab – I did not have a reaction).
Overall, we will be back. We found the pricing reasonable. For 3 of us, we spent less than $100, about $85.
For anyone who knows, Sushi Choo Choo operates mostly as a self-serve setup. The server brings your drink and that’s essentially the only interaction you have until you ask for the check. That was exactly my experience. A gentleman with glasses brought my drink, and that was the extent of our interaction.
When I finished eating, I asked for the check, signed it, and left. As I got to my car, I realized I hadn’t left a tip. Considering this is basically a self-serve experience and I had almost zero interaction with the server, I didn’t think much of it.
What happened next was completely unacceptable.
As I was getting into my car, the server FOLLOWED me into the parking lot, holding my receipt, and told me I “needed to sign the box” — clearly referring to the tip line. I felt immediately uncomfortable. Being approached at my car over a tip is inappropriate and intimidating. I ended up adding a tip just to avoid escalating the situation. He even looked at it right in front of me, and his expression made it clear he still wasn’t satisfied.
Tipping is customary, yes — but it is not mandatory. No customer should ever be chased into a parking lot and pressured into paying more. That crosses a serious line.
It’s incredibly disappointing because the food is good and I’ve supported this place for years. But no matter how good the sushi is, I will not return to a business where an employee thinks it’s acceptable to follow a customer to their car and pressure them for money.
Management seriously needs to address this before someone feels unsafe enough to take further action.
