While traveling for business, our team wanted to avoid the usual chains and find some genuine local seafood.
This place is the real deal—classic “old school” atmosphere and excellent food. It’s a rare find these days.
Thanks for a great evening and a wonderful dinner!
We’ve been lucky enough to eat seafood all over the world. I grew up fishing off the east end of Long Island and have eaten just about everything one can pull out of the ocean… yet somehow, stone crabs kept eluding us. So with the craving steadily building, Miami and the Keys would have to wait. We stayed local and headed to Catfish Dewey’s… it was a great choice.
Instead of bread service, Dewey’s starts you off with hush puppies and coleslaw, which was a hit right out of the gate. We added two cold beers and then confessed to our server that we were stone-crab newbies. She smiled, leaned into the moment, and gave us a friendly crash course: how they’re sourced fresh daily, why they’re served cold, and how they’re cracked by machine (something I will need to see live at some point).
We each ordered the Large Claws, two pounds (8 claws) with fries. Instinct says “compare them to lobster or king crab,” but honestly? Stone crabs stand on their own. Sweet, meaty, clean flavor. Served cold with a creamy house mustard sauce that wasn’t too “mustardy” and didn’t smother the crab flavor. I tried them with and without the sauce, and both were honestly great. The pure crab flavor really does hold up on its own. Part of me wishes I could’ve sampled them with a little melted butter just for fun, something I will need to try down the road.
Bottom line: Stone Crabs — have been officially added to our seafood résumé, and Catfish Dewey’s was the perfect low-key spot to finally check this South Florida classic off our list.
First off, we walked in and the SMELL was unbearable, the carpet needs to be pulled up and torched. It reeks of wet dirty carpet.
Whoever their hostess was this evening had a huge attitude problem & was very unpleasant (I don’t want to play the race card but I did watch how she interacted with the “other” guest compared to the way she greeted and handle us.) When we came in, we asked to be seated for 5, she took us to a table for 4, when we clarified how many were in our party she rudely and aggressively snatched the menus from the table, took us to a new table, under hand threw the menus on the new table, and walked away. Weird? But okay.
We were seated and sat for about 10-15 minutes before being asked for our drink order. Another 10 minutes before we got the “complimentary” hush puppies. We were seated around 6:53 pm our order was taken around 7:25 and our food came out around 8pm. I have proof of these times because our family likes to pull out games when waiting to pass time and I took pictures of the game.
The drinks were watered down, especially the pink lemonade, it tasted like dish water.
Everyone at our table order different things, I ordered the seafood boil and I asked our waiter if I could replace the clams in my meal, she told me she would have them replace the clams with more shrimps, I was pleased with that. I get the meal and there are all of 1 potato, 4 pieces of sliced sausage,2 DISGUSTINGLY mushy corn on the cob, and the clams. What really took the cake was the filthy and uncleaned crabs that were on my plate. I was so hungry and just enjoying my family that I continued eating it. I cracked the first set of crab legs and there was NO MEAT in any of them. I’m like, is this a joke? Yet I continued eating it. I am so upset with myself for not taking a picture I just was so quick to get it out my face that I forgot. When I go to grab about cluster of crabs, the most nasty gunk of filth and barnacles were stuck to the back side of the crabs (I attached an image where if you zoom in you may can see it a little.)
When I asked the waiter what it was and if the kitchen cleaned the crabs she then told me verbatim that “the crabs come in frozen and we just cook them.” I was disgusted.
My brother ordered chicken tenders that were still cold in the middle? My sister ordered the fried shrimp platter, and the fries were underdone.
My dad ordered the all you can eat crab legs, they were cold and unseasoned, and the waitress acted like she was annoyed that he was asking for more of the all you can eat crabs?
Not just that. My little sister just so happens to look up at the ceiling & her mouth dropped, when we looked up to see what it was….mold? Maybe even BLACK mold?
Then I had to rush back into the restaurant to grab napkins because before we can even leave good, my little sister threw up all her food. Now she doesn’t feel well.
This entire experience has me sick to my stomach, a lot of things I play about but food and cleanliness aren’t one. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience and I suggest anyone else who is looking to eat here, just be mindful.
Edited: not sure why I can’t upload images but I wish I could, pay attention to the mold in the crevices of ceiling and in bathroom.
I heard this place has been a staple for years and was happy to finally pay a visit. I ordered the catfish seafood combo, blackened. It came with two catfish fillers, scallops, shrimps and your choice of a potato side (sweet potato fries were a couple bucks extra).
Overall, it was really good. Nothing over overcooked or dry, the seasoning was on point for my dish. My girlfriend had the same but with Mahi Mahi, she did say hers was a bit salty but good overall.
The cost of the seafood combo was about 30 dollars (again, sweet potato fries were extra).
The service was great! We were a big party and our waitress not only took our orders correctly, but was able to provide whatever we asked for (extra waters, condiments, etc), and was helpful with answering our questions. Major props to her!
