Food was overall good. I ordered a 1/2 pound of brisket, 1/2bacon burnt ends and 1/2 slab of ribs. My brisket was a little dry. Bbq sauce would have helped however, I asked cashier for bbq sauce before leaving with my to go order and she assured me it was in my bag. I got home and there was no sauce and no bread. The cornbread i ordered was a crumbly mess. The beans were great. Just a little disappointed after waiting outside for 45 minutes.

Definitely one of my favorite BBQ in KC. Highly recommended. I had a combo of ribs and brisket and sides and everything was great.

Everything about Chef Js restaurant is a 10/10. It is the most amazing BBQ I’ve ever tried! And the employees are so friendly, full of great recommendations, and remember their customers.
It should be criminal to put BBQ sauce on top of the meat, but dang do they know how to make amazing sauces. We live over 3 hours away and it is always worth the drive! Make sure to order extra and bring a cooler to bring home some extras to enjoy at home!

Finally had a chance to try Chef J. This is a great BBQ experience in KC and I recommend trying it out. Turkey and Ribs were fantastic. The ribs are not sweet, salt and pepper rub and super tender and flavorful. I didn’t even add sauce. The brisket flavor was great, however, the lean flat portion was fall apart tender but oddly firm in the chew. The fatty portion where the point is and the rub was phenomenal in taste and tenderness. Hickory beans and elotes weee perfectly fine, but not the stars of the show. I look forward to going back again.

I was able to finish work early today, so moved up my visit to Chef J to today instead of tomorrow. Even in the middle of a workday there was a line waiting outside for them to open. And the two strangers in front of me telling me every detail of their experience here. First of all, the place is located in the middle of the historic West Bottoms in KC. This area had many red brick buildings that transports you back to a forgotten era. Chef J BBQ is located in one of these buildings. The interior is also has beautiful brick walls with hard wood floors. If there was a speakeasy bbq joint, I would imagine looking like this. But how can keep such a delicious secret. The brisket was nice and tender and melted in my mouth. The bark was nice and crispy with a peppery bite. I love a peppy bark with a nice amount of smoke. The ribs also had a similar peppery bite, with the tenderness to bite through, but not pull away from the bone. Perfect. The pork belly burnt ends were covered in this wonderful sweet bbq sauce with a crispy exterior and a soft interior. Kinda the feeling of biting into a meat version of a peach. The jalapeño cheddar sausage oozed out each bite a flow of cheese. Of course the meats are great but what I enjoyed between each bite was the broccoli salad. Little pieces of bacon, cranberries, and cashews tossing a chili crisp dressing and was a refreshing bite between the fatty meats. I loved the food and the overall atmosphere created by the building and the interior.

It is very rare for me to give out 5 stars at all, ESPECIALLY when it comes to BBQ. As a Texas native that moved to MO a year ago and have been looking for some brisket to give me that at home taste, it’s been a LONG year. Stopped in to Chef Js today and man oh man, out of everywhere I’ve been in MO this is by far the best. Bacon burnt ends are sweet, savory, tangy meat butter. Amazing. The ribs are insanely well seasoned and perfectly tender. Now for the most important part… the brisket. This is where every other place has failed terribly. Chef J on the other hand is putting up a fight with some of the best Texas Brisket I’ve had. Tender, seasoned to perfection, smokiness is incredible, and juicy. Can’t go wrong at all. The sides were not my cup of tea but I can see how they would be others faves. Everything is bold with flavor. 10/10 recommend.

Best ribs I have ever had. The brisket and jalapeno sausage were just as good. Went ahead and ordered all the sides just to try them. The beans, potato salad we my favorite the rest we ok and the coleslaw well just missing something. This place has times listed from 11:30 to 4:30 or Sold Out. We waited too long the first time we tried this place and sure enough it was closed because they were “sold out” . This time, we got there early and still had people ahead and behind us. So do yourself a favor, get there early. If you’re from out of town, you might wanna grab a rack of ribs to go.

I’ve eaten at almost every barbecue place in Kansas City, this might be hands, down the best hidden secret in the entire region. We had the MVP, the three of us did, We went back for seconds. It had sausage brisket and pork, the pork even after sitting out understand which for 5 minutes to not dry out it was still moist and the beef was so great with the bark You didn’t need sauce. The sauces that were given were good even though the spicy one was thin, but the mustard one was very much liked and the regular barbecue sauce was good for what it was.
When you’re not get to try to burnt ends because they were sold out by the time we got to put our order in.

We waited in line in the rain and it was worth it. The food was fantastic – all of it. However, what will keep me coming back are the ribs.
The ribs were cooked perfectly, not too smoky, and tender but not fall off of the bone. If only one thing, I’m not a fan of the rib tips which were left on.
The brisket was moist, smoky and flavorful.
The pulled pork was different – it was (black) peppery and I really liked that.
The roasted garlic sausage? Delicious.
All of our sides were also good.
For the entire time we were there, there was a constant line of hungry people. The staff were efficient and got through the line steadily.
Can’t wait to come back!

The princess and I found ourselves in the West bottoms searching the few antique stores that were open when we decided to grab a bite to eat. She said that she heard good things about chef J. I am always impressed at anyone who thinks they can compete in Kansas City with BBQ. So I found the food here unremarkable. Nothing wrong with it just not great. Too many excellent places that are way better than average to choose from, that’s what makes it so difficult to stand out. The next time we go to first Fridays it’s likely we try Chef J again.
