After a journey of many miles and much questionable gas station coffee, I declared it time to restore my withered constitution. Thus we marched, shivering yet resolute, through the streets of Nulu in search of sustenance. Nearly all establishments were dark and silent, as though the entire district had taken a vow of early bedtime. At last, like desperate pilgrims spying a distant chapel, we came upon a curious refuge known as Galaxie.
Inside, the scene was nothing short of peculiar: a congregation consisting equally of venerable elders and bright eyed college youth, all gathered at an hour in which no respectable soul ought to be out, unless committing either mischief or regret. I noticed Christmas decorations had already sprung forth, far too early, as if attempting to convince November that it was December and that resistance was futile.
Famished beyond the capacity for judgment, we ordered our provisions with haste. When the food arrived, it proved respectable, though hardly the sort of fare one would immortalize in sonnet form. The drinks were likewise. Yet I confess: in that bitter cold, the warm sustenance did strike like a small mercy from the heavens.
Shall I return to Galaxie one day? I know not. My heart feels neither drawn nor repelled. But did I depart in a foul humor? Certainly not. A man with a full stomach rarely has the energy to be grumpy.
We arrived in Louisville late this past weekend and we’re pleasantly surprised that a resturant with food this good was still open. We got luck and we’re able to join in music bingo as well. It was a blast and food was very good.
Whether you’re in the mood for a laid-back dinner date or a late-night meal to sober up, Galaxie’s menu fits the bill. Just a word of caution: steer clear of their margaritas, they’re dangerously good and strong. The bartender also said that later in the night, the back room turns into a fun, dance club type vibe, adding another exciting layer to your visit.
One critical detail: the kitchen doesn’t open until 4 PM on some days despite the bar opening at 11:30 AM Tuesday-Saturday. Open hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11:30 AM-midnight (until 2 AM Friday-Saturday), closed Sunday-Monday. Street parking in NuLu can be tight during peak hours, but there’s a Green Building Lot directly adjacent at 736 E Market.
The venue transforms into “Miracle on Market” during the holidays—a Christmas pop-up with themed cocktails and decor that draws big crowds. Service quality varies; some reviewers note quick, friendly bartenders while others experienced indifferent staff during slower periods. It’s best suited for casual drinks and shareables rather than a formal dinner, especially when they have DJs spinning (check their Instagram @galaxiebar for schedules)
They’re open on Sundays now if you’re looking for something good to eat in a good area!
