Deplorable Rob
Stopped by here this past first week of May while giving my wife & boys a short tour of McHenry County. Earlier that day, my family & I were at the Tulip Fest in Spring Grove and decided to hang around the area a bit before going back home so I mentioned I’d take em around.
Haven’t been out this way in a while being we live in Beach Park in northeastern Lake County. I myself have been to McHenry/McHenry County quite a bit when I lived in Round Lake from May ’89-Nov ’02.
Anyways the Chicago grill is on par with the usual Chicago style grub which was quite good. Located along busy IL 120 in the heart of downtown McHenry, I bet this place gets flooded with take-out orders during the work week.
That’s one thing about the Chicago area is that if you’re gonna live here then you better learn how to love Chicago style food because if you don’t then you’re a communist (just kiddin’).
Not sure when we’ll be back in the area but when we are and if we get that craving for Chicago style grub, we know where to go. I try my best to support local and hope for continued boomin’ business for the owner(s).

Food is ok. Not the cheapest beef in town, especially on a per size basis. Tommy’s offers a larger beef for the same price. Sucks because Tommy’s beef is always spicy and greasy and upsets my stomach.
Management/staff doesn’t care what you have to say. I’d been coming to Alex’s for many years and the home made giardinera peppers are about the only reason I still go, and for some reason the manager lady feels obligated to tell me the difference of peppers every time I order and claims the home made giardinera is mild. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t, it varies based on the jalapeño peppers, how many seeds/membrane the peppers have, etc. to call it mild will cause confusion and upset customers. 20 years in food service, I just know this.
Tried to tell the lady at the counter they needed to add a big beef to compete with neighboring Tommy’s. Charge more if you must obviously but it should be added.
Why? Alex’s fries generally have sucked. I’m not much for paying 5.00 for a side I don’t enjoy and I’d rather just have the bigger beef. Portillos also offers this option. Thought maybe by suggesting it we’d mutually benefit but it fell on deaf ears.
If only they could listen half as well as they tell.
Still ok in my book, but just ok.

The food is really great here, the prices are very competitive. I’m giving five stars for everything, I just asked that the ghost kitchen have some kind of reference to the restaurant name (billboard) so that Doordashers can find this easily. Keep up the good work thank you!

Was looking for a good gyro experience and today I found one. I could tell when I walked through the door that I was in the right place. 2 gyro rotisseries going and all brown and crunchy. The staff was older friendly guys who had been doing this for a long time. I asked the guy at the counter whats the best thing they had in the place and he immediately said The Gyro Plate. So when in Rome… We ordered and he told us to have a seat and in a moment our food was ready. A surprisingly large amount of food. The pita bread was soft and flavorful, the meat was not too salty or too garlicky or too greasy and the veggies were fresh. I liked that the meat was browned by the IR rotisserie and not fried up on the griddle. The parsley on the onions was refreshing as well. Large basket of fries that tasted like clean oil and potatoes. The tzatziki sauce was unique. Never had one like it. Yogurt based but, really different in a good way. The inside of the place was clean and smelled okay. And oh, they have their own home made giardiniera. Didn’t try it yet but, I’ll be back for something that requires a little of that on it.

Ordered a beef dipped with cheese, & was given a sandwich completely submerged in au jus. I asked for hot peppers and was given a mix with raw celery, green bell peppers and jalapeños. If I knew that was their idea of a beef, I would have not of ordered that.

I brought my husband here to dine in for lunch. He ordered a double cheeseburger. Almost half way through his burger all of a sudden there was a very loud crunch sound. It was as if he was chewing on rocks. He spit it out & it appeared to be nasty old dirty gristle. My husband could have broken his teeth that’s how hard it was. NEVER AGAIN!!!

I live 7 miles south of McHenry and today I had been bike riding on the Prairie Trail. I got hungry after 16 miles and googled “fast food near me” and the results showed Alex’s nearby, so I stopped there to try it and the Hamburger I ate was absolutely delicious. They offer great service and very reasonable prices for everything…. a very good variety of food choices, something for everyone! I went away very satisfied. You’ve gotta try it!

I give this place a 20/10 service was great and so was the short wait time. Price is more than reasonable. The food was outstanding. I had ordered a hot dog with fries and a drink, a 1/4 hamburger and an order of their HOMEMADE crab ragoons. Everything was fantastic especially the crab ragoons.

First off the bathroom was disgusting. That was the first sign to pack myself up and go. But I stayed because usually holes in wall places have the best food. This one definitely did not.
Run!!!
