My fiancé and I visited Cowan’s Public for the first time and left feeling a bit underwhelmed overall.

To start on a positive note, the cocktails were excellent. We each ordered a different signature drink, and both were beautifully crafted and flavorful, no complaints there at all. The appetizers were also solid and came out at a reasonable pace. Despite the restaurant looking packed when we arrived, the service was very good. Our server was attentive, friendly, and made us feel well taken care of throughout the evening.

Unfortunately, the main courses were where things fell short. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich, and my portion was noticeably burnt on one side. My fiancé ordered the Caesar salad, which looked more like a small side salad than a full entrée. That was disappointing, especially after such a strong start to the meal. We ended the night with espresso martinis, which were decent but didn’t quite match the quality of the first round of cocktails.

Overall, the evening started strong but ended with a feeling of “that was alright.” We’d be open to giving it another try, perhaps during happy hour, since the drinks and service were definite highlights.

We ordered chicken wings and steak frites tonight for dinner take out. It was so good! We were pleasantly surprised! We will definitely order from here again! We plan on going there in person soon! We can’t say enough good things about the food! You have to try it! Highly recommend!

I ate here once in 2024 and once in 2025.
In 2025 we went there maybe the first week of December. We had our reservation we sat down right away.
We were really impressed.
But to wait for your food 1 hour and 35 minutes is ridiculous.
The table on the right of us and the table the left of us got beautiful full plate of long french fries. We basically got the bottom of the bag that you find of those tiny black frozen French fries and maybe a hand full . How many times do we ask for our drinks ? Well we got up after a while and went to the bar by ourselves and got our own drinks .
To pay over $130 for three handful of food is ridiculous (More like three small appetizers). Way too overpriced for under seasoned appetizers that you say is entree . No I would not eat here anymore. On top of that the table left of us how long they waited got free food but we were not offered.
And I really don’t know why I tipped cuz basically nobody cared about us. And when we finally did get the food it was cold so most likely just sat there. Do yourself a favor and go to McDonald’s which I do not personally like.

Went here during the holiday season for Miracle on Centre. The place was super cute and festive, putting you in the mood for Christmas. We got a bunch of the small plates and shared them. The holiday cocktail menu was great – I got the first drink on the menu that was in the snowflake glass and that was really good. The waitress Sam was very friendly and helpful got our order to the table asap. Only thing is they get super busy during this time of year since it is so popular, so we were approached by the manager and told that there was another table waiting for our table, and we had to get up and leave, so you can’t really sit and get another drink or chill for a bit. We weren’t even there for that long. That made us feel rushed and kind of puts a damper on the whole dining experience. I’ve never been told by someone that we had to leave a table due to another reservation.

We went to the bar to get more drinks but that was packed as well. But still, all in all it’s definitely a cute holiday experience that will put you in the mood – just expect that you can’t hang for too long since it gets so busy.

One of my favorite restaurants in Nutley, Cowan’s consistently delivers high quality food, great cocktails, and friendly service. I went for lunch, sat outside, and brought my doggie. The chef created a a deliciously savory potato and aioli starter that alternates between fries or chips. Highly recommend. The chef prepared my book at a medium and I really enjoyed the candied bacon. I would order again.

Definitely found a new favorite neighborhood bar! The vibes inside are immaculate. A little piece of NYC in Nutley. Dig the lighting & decor. The cocktails are even better; every detail, from the glasses to the garnishes, is finely crafted, and the bartenders really know what they’re doing. I tried the wings for the first time yesterday (happy hour special – such a great deal) and was pleasantly surprised! Love everything about this place.

We arrived, for what we thought would be an earlier dinner, at 430p. We were told there were only counter seats left. There were a few high tops that were not occupied for the duration of our stay of about an hour, but we were directed to the window counter. There is no service at the window so we waited for drinks at the bar. However, the bar was practically full so there really wasn’t an area to place drink orders. After a bit we placed an order for two of the Holiday drinks. It was not plausible to attempt to order any food without service so we finished our drinks and left. The drinks were tasty and in themed glasses. We had wanted to try this place for some time but oddly the experience was not enjoyable. Tables remained opened and no options to place orders for food, or even to get a second drink, just wasn’t working. The place was decorated in lovely Christmas decor and extremely festive. Too bad the service was not able to match the decorations! Cheers!

Came for brunch and enjoyed it! Parking was a little difficult but we finally found a spot on the street. I ordered the omelet of the week. I was a little disappointed I couldn’t order it with egg whites only, but it was still fantastic and the homefries were super crispy and delicious. My husband ordered the breakfast burger with sweet potato fries. There ended up being an upcharge for sweet potato fries which we weren’t told when we were given it as an option for a side but they were fantastic and crispy. We shared the overnight oat parfait which was also delicious. It was very sweet though so I would recommend it as a dessert instead of an app. Overall brunch was super tasty and the portions were large. Our server was very friendly. The vibe was cozy. I’d definitely come back to try other foods and order the sweet potato fries again!

This is a great spot! Period!
Great spot for specialty cocktails! I had their Once Upon a time in Mexico and it dis not disappoint. That’s one with Mezcal as the base spirit. Then of course I had to try their old-fashioned. The food was properly executed as well. I had their prosciutto crostini and the oysters. Highly recommended!

We loved the pop up at Cowans. The choices were great. The staff was friendly. We had a very nice time. The drinks were fun. Be careful that you check for sweetness level as they can be quite sweet!!
