I ordered lamb momos, lamb seekh kebab, vada pav, pizza samosa, desi chicken curry on the bone with naan and Schezwan rice with a diet coke. Very good food I must say.
The momos were made fresh and came with a spicy dip and some broth, very warming and a really nice style of dumpling, available steamed or pan fried (I went with fried). The lamb seekh kebab was fresh and tender, served sizzling on a hot iron with a bed of veg. I would’ve liked them slightly more seasoned but definitely well made and succulent.
Vada pav a soft bread roll with a spiced potato fritter disc inside. Good level of spice going on and was a really good version of authentic Indian street food. Pizza samosas weren’t traditional but my curiosity got the better of me and they actually weren’t bad! They had corn, cheese etc and were lightly spiced! Served with a really nice Schezwan dip which I loved.
Chicken curry was amazing, came hot and fresh with 2 chicken drumsticks and a load more diced chicken in the dish! It wasn’t a spicy curry but had good depth of flavour and I think had really good crowd appeal. Schezwan rice was a really nice change from the usual and I love that they have this flavour incorporated with a lot of the menu, very new style Pakistani/Indian street food.
Overall great experience, on the expensive side for Indian restaurants but still very much worth it and great food overall.
We had dosa and I cant remember the exact dish but it was chana (lentils) with chapatis (roti) and my god it was delicious.
The waiter was friendly and welcoming. The building on the outside looks amazing and the indoor decor bought that class and a touch of India. There was a throwback of the Lagaan movie poster amongst other art on the walls and it had a nice feel to the place.
This place offers an authentic Indian dining experience. The vibrant Indian music playing as you step inside instantly transports you to Bollywood, and you’re welcomed by friendly staff with big smilesl.
We had the Chicken Biryani, Dal Palak (main), Saag Aloo (side), and naan bread. Everything was served piping hot and freshly prepared within a reasonable time.
Chicken Biryani: Rich in spices, with fragrant basmati rice mixed with vegetables and plenty of tender chicken pieces.
Dal Palak: Subtly and lightly spiced — healthy, comforting, and full of flavour.
Saag Aloo: Medium-spiced, with soft potato slices in a delicious spinach curry.
The food was reasonably priced and offered great value for money considering the quality, portion sizes, and taste.
Overall definitely recommend!
No oily or salty food – Just pure spices, butter, good ingredients and deep flavours.
Easily as good as some of the well known high end Indian restaurants in town but priced far more reasonably and in a relaxed, casual setting.
Needs a little bit of constructive work around service – recognising when customers are at the door and offering menus promptly to avoid confusion but besides that, our waiter was smart, friendly and polite. All was quickly forgiven once the food arrived!
Highly recommend the lamb cutlets and Chana Dahl. Will aim to cover off the rest of the menu over the proceeding year!
Keep up the good work and emphasis on quality flavours!
The bigger issue was the food. We ordered a prawn masala and a muttar paneer masala.
Both arrived as the same smooth red tomato sauce with different fillings dropped in. No spice depth and no heat. It was just a fgeneric base gravy. It tasted more like tomato sauce than a properly cooked curry.
For £43.90 (excluding service charge), this was terrible value. Very underwhelming.
Service charge was removed without debate, which tells you everything.
We won’t be returning.
Highlights were light and crispy puris, smoky aubergine and the best garlic Nan we’d ever tasted; a million miles from the stodgy mattresses often inflicted on unsuspecting diners in this country.
I love curry but am usually disappointed by Indian cuisine in the UK, so I was pleasantly surprised.
TLDR: Desi’s is great value and head and shoulders above your bog-standard British Indian.
