Marcel Kitchen is an award-winning Israeli-Mediterranean café, bakery, and kitchen in Upper Montclair, NJ. Marcel’s in Montclair is one of those rare places that simply gets everything right. No drama, no fuss—just consistently good food, great drinks, and a genuinely pleasant atmosphere every time you visit.
The staff are always kind, polite, and welcoming, which makes the experience feel relaxed from the moment you walk in. The patrons tend to be calm and respectful as well, creating a comfortable environment where people keep to themselves and enjoy their time.
It’s a lovely spot whether you’re meeting someone for a quiet breakfast date, stopping in for a quick coffee, or gathering with friends for brunch or dinner before a stroll through town. Marcel’s has that easy, reliable charm that keeps you coming back. A true Montclair gem.

This is a great place for vegetarians/vegans. They have a vegan schwarma wrap – I haven’t tried it yet. The Herbed Falafel wrap is very tasty, good texture on the falafel, nice crunch from the cabbage and pickles, yummy tahini sauce – wonderful pita. The Malawach Sabich is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time, mostly because of the malawach (Yemenite flatbread) it is wrapped in – subtle sweet flavor flaky, and soft at the same time – warm – you have to try it. There is also fried eggplant, tomatoes, boiled egg, (I have mine w/no egg) and feta cheese on the sandwich, but the malawach is the star. You must eat this sandwich in the restaurant, it is not as good as take-out – you loose some of the flakiness on the wrap.
This is a semi-fast food place, so you give your order at the counter and staff deliver it to your table. The staff are always friendly and helpful. There is complimentary fruit/veggie infused water. They have unique a handwashing station.
They also have baked sweets – lovely baklava and halvah rugelach! Also – their borekas are wonderful.
It is always crowded when I visit, but we always manage to find a table. Not the most comfortable seating – but the food more than makes up for it.

Pleasantly surprised. Was in the mood for something different and this was spot on. Didn’t expect it to be this good. Definitely try it. Gave it a 4 star because of the way it is set up. You order, pay, seat yourself with a table number and someone brings out your food. You will NOT see them again. You get your own water and utensils. You then clean up after yourself. Keep that in mind when you are asked to tip at the register when paying for your meal. They do have a cute handwashing machine right up front so no trip to the bathroom needed. Omg my grilled chicken Shawarma pita was so fresh. When I say tasty! If I lived closer this would be my weekend stop. I enjoyed my crispy za’atar fries with the dip. This meal makes you want to lick your fingers. lol! Yummy! My friend had the Quinoa breakfast bowl which she said it was good. All I know is that this spot was worth my drive. They have dessert/pastries you can get as well. The matcha is a good choice for a beverage. Enjoy! I will be back really soon! I have to take my boys to try it.

I went to an event that you catered in Bloomfield last Saturday. The Vegan shawarma pita may be the best thing I ever ate! I’m trying to replicate the light green sauce , what was it? I live in South Jersey but I wish we had a place like yours near me. The pita and all the sauces were amazing but the vegan shawarma pita, best thing EVER!

A frustrating experience for what should have been a very simple substitution. Marcel was out of the vegan shawarma, so I requested they just replace with the vegan meatballs. The chef said no. The staff suggested a meatball wrap instead which was no problem. Then the chef declined to put the meatball meal on a wrap.
I totally understand the pressures of running a restaurant, however this was a very simple swap. I did my best to be understanding. I was with a party of 9, and we spent over $200. I don’t feel I am special, but it would have been VERY easy to help me out when something was out of stock.
Thank you Marcel for having vegan options, but please try to work with your customers. The rest of the people in my party enjoyed their food.

Good spot for breakfast or brunch or dinner . Clean and simple food . Good taste . I had satsuka today and for me the tomato gravy is to sour. The sandwiches are good . Coffee is good too. The bakery items are also good: I can’t say awesome taste for the dishes but it was good for me and I can come back sometimes for coffee and quick bites .
