This is a nice place and they’ve put quite a lot of detail and effort into the decor, and it’s all really nice. That being said, the menu and offerings seem very American friendly and cater more towards Americans. If that is you and you prefer that type of place, you’ll love it here. I wanted something a bit different, the decor is so overly done I wouldn’t expect to see a Mexican person eating in here unless it’s because they work here.
This is not to say anything negative, there’s definitely a market for it. There are no agua frescas here, the chilaquiles were absolutely covered with so much cheese you could’ve told me it was baked ziti or mac and cheese. This is a spot for the white ladies to turn up after work and have drinks. You’re their target market. Even though, I an a white lady myself, this was even too American for me. Wonderfully nice staff though and thoroughly attentive.

We decided to grab some dinner at La Frontera in Middletown, went to order and they didnt have anymore Chile Rellenos….so we left and tried Zapata for the 1st time. We WILL be choosing Zapata from here on out. The margaritas were good, the salsa they brought out was chunkier and hotter than La Frontera, the chicken soup and tamale app was delicious. I ordered the Chile Relleno entree and it was delicious as well.

The absolute BEST Mexican food and service I’ve ever had! Our group of friends felt like we were welcomed in like family. The owner brought complimentary quesadillas to welcome us and poured out the hospitality to us the entire dining experience! Thank you for a really special night and memories!

They did a great job of taking over the El Bandido space with this new management. They have restored it to what it used to be years ago; an above-the-grade Mexican restaurant with quality food and class. Great job!

I have been going to this place for years. It just changed owners and I want to tell you about the good things and the needs for improvement. First off, the great stuff. Their staff is amazing! They’re all very attentive and very nice. They don’t just serve your meal and disappear. They’re present. Second, this place used to be like a cave. All the windows were covered up. This was done to follow the decor of Mayan ruins or town. The whole place is a giant mural with added structures. It’s not a big place, so having no windows made it really dark. Now, it’s got windows but it looks weird with the decor. Now for the menu. The menu used to be a book. The new owners have revised it, which is good, but they left taco salads and tortilla soup out, which should be a staple. Now for the worst part, the food. It’s not that the food is bad, I want to be clear on this. It just doesn’t have much flavor. Even my white Jewish husband was of the same opinion, and jewish food tends to be pretty bland. Lol
The only thing that had a lot of flavor was the salsa they serve with the chips, and the taste was mostly heat. I imagine it’s made that way to economize on it.
The new owner is just starting, so I’m sure he’ll make a lot of improvements along the way. He’s actually there during rush times serving and taking care of customers, which is a really good sign. My suggestion would be to support the man while he gets on his feet. Small businesses are what keep our local economies alive. One more bad thing. The handicapped parking spaces. There’s no room for a wheelchair on either side and getting out of those spots requires much more maneuvering than necessary.
