As far as the restaurant, the food and outdoor seating was underwhelming, at least not what I expected. The wine/drink list was much smaller than I expected, VERY limited wine list. Had a glass of the white and red wine which came in a water glass. The white wine tasted like it was opened the day before. The Burrata, Meatballs, and Ravioli Special dishes were worth having again, but the Mafaldine could’ve had a thicker/richer sauce and the Lumache Alla Vodka was SUPER salty. The service was great though! Wasn’t going to complain to the server but probably won’t go back to the restaurant, only the market.
I recommend making a reservation if you’re dead set on visiting as my wife and I walked in and barely got seating at the bar. All the tables were reserved. This was just 5PM on Friday. So it is a popular place.
Very fair prices for the quality of the dishes and depth of flavor.
The service was punctual and thorough and the timing of our entrees, along with our wine was spot on. All 4 of us ordered pasta dishes that were quite large and so tasty. And the wine accompanied them beautifully. Our waiter was attentive, yet gave us plenty of time to enjoy our dinner before taking our dessert order. We shared the tiramisu, which was deliciously rich and moist with the right balance of flavors.
We all loved our experience. The only drawback was the outdoor tables. They are pretty small picnic tables and only seat 4, very tightly. So I’d say the ambience was less than ideal.
I came into Montelupo recently with my wife to place a takeaway order. The woman with dark brunette hair at the register (who processed the transaction below) was extraordinarily rude & impatient with us. Candidly, I’ve never been treated so poorly by someone taking my money before.
We were at the register for a mere 90 seconds, and it was nowhere near as busy as it has been in prior times that we’ve patroned the establishment. We also shared with this woman that we’d only order 4 dishes to go – and by the time we were ordering the final dish, she literally asked us to step out of line & come back later to order once we’d figured things out. I’ve never had a cashier ask that before. We proceeded to put in our final order and complete the transaction. I made a conscious decision not to include a tip due to the way she was treating us, and when she saw that I hadn’t included the tip she gave me a dirty look, turned around and said nothing to us. Not even a “thank you” or “your order will be ready in X minutes”. I had to check myself with my wife to see if I was misinterpreting the circumstances, and she responded “no, that was horrible service.”
When I came back 20 minutes later, this same woman was at the counter and refused to acknowledge me. I was standing 5 feet away, and there was not a single other customer in the market area. She just stood there looking elsewhere & avoiding eye contact. I finally saw the bartender come over and ask me if the order was mine – he picked up my order that had been sitting there and handed it to me.
I’ve never had an experience like this at Montelupo nor the Focacceria before. To be honest, I’ve never had an experience like that anywhere. It’s hard for me as a paying customer to feel welcome in an establishment where the mentality of the cashier is adversarial toward patrons. It’s very clear to me that the customer service at Montelupo has a long way to go to catch up to the quality of the food being served there. When I shared this feedback directly with Montelupo’s management team, they never even responded. Clearly, they don’t care about their patrons.
I sadly won’t be returning to Montelupo again as a customer – I value the money I work hard to earn, and want to spend it at businesses that value me as a customer.
It did not disappoint!!! We had the radicchio salad, the burrata and focaccia to start. Everything was sooooo delicious!!! I regret getting the small radicchio salad!!! It was absolutely mouth watering!! Our focaccia was really dry & tasted old, so we told them and they brought a fresh plate and it was on point.
For entree’s, we had the cavatelli(?) it was pasta with chicken and spices in what seemed like a chicken broth, sooooo yummy!
My hubs had the more simple one with blistered tomatoes & basil tbh at I think was just tossed in olive oil. It was also very good.
Dessert was just incredible. We had the Nutella gelato and the tiramisu.
We stopped eating our pasta halfway through, to be able to get dessert and we struggled to finish. The tiramisu hit all the highlights and the only slight criticism I would have is that it is really mascarpone forward. But oh so good!!
Highly recommend but you definitely want to make a reservation if going on the weekend.
They also have a super cute market with cheese, cured Italian meats, wine, olives, pasta, olive oils etc. They also have pre-made bake at home pastas, desserts to go and some frozen dishes!
