I haven’t tried (what I think of as) their more traditional Thai entrées yet (curries, noodle dishes… I’m excited they have a pumpkin curry!), but the Sweet & Sour Dinner with tofu was delicious (and a dish I never used to be able to find when I was a vegetarian!). I’ve enjoyed both their Tom Kha and their Tom Yum soups (though the Tom Yum at a spice level of 3 / 10 was still pretty spicy, and my spice tolerance at least used to be fairly good, so be forewarned!). As a former vegetarian, I’d also like to say: I love that their online ordering platform gives you the option to *not* get fish sauce in your soup if you don’t want it.
Dessert- and drink-wise, the Sticky Rice w/ Mango was tasty (the mango seemed very fresh and was quite flavorful), and I enjoyed both the Thai Iced Tea and the Boba Smoothies – which was a nice variation on the usual bubble tea. I got the pina colada Boba Smoothie, and was not disappointed – and they’ve got a number of unusual flavors available as well as the classics, so I’m looking forwards to making my way through the list. Just be careful when you stick the straws in with the Thai Iced Tea (or other thin drinks, presumably – I didn’t have this issue at all with the Boba Smoothies), because the lids plus bubble tea straws seem to let some through. Or, maybe I’m just bad with not spilling things on myself, which to be fair *is* definitely true. Not a complaint, just use a bit of extra caution.
Oh, and on the very first time I got their Samosa, I thought they were the best-cooked version of Thai samosas I’d ever had. I don’t know if I was just extra hungry that day or what, but it seemed to be just a bit more fried and browned than the mini Thai samosa usually are – just a little more like the larger Indian variety, although still distinct of course. The homemade sauce they gave with them was also a lot nicer than the run-of-the-mill dipping sauce some places give. …I have many opinions about samosas, if you can’t tell.
Anyway! While I will miss Panda (whose space I believe Mekong Diner took over), I’m very glad to have such tasty Thai food so close to my doorstep – and, honestly, I’m more often in the mood for Thai food anyway. …Especially with Boba Tea and Thai Iced Tea available, which I could pretty much drink nonstop. I’ve only done their online ordering and curbside pickup as of yet, but the people who brought my food out were very nice.
I attached a picture of the Samosa, although as I noted in the caption, they gave me 4 – I just ate one right away because I was hungry.
Another thing that I appreciate is that their dinner entrees are on average $3-5 less than other Thai food restaurants. Even more on certain fish entrees. (To be fair we have not ordered a fish entrée from Mekong yet.)
My only criticism isn’t of the restaurant or the food- I simply wish there was a notes/special instruction box when ordering on the website.
The only caution I would add is to perhaps be conservative “middle of the road” in your spice level request the first time. Spice level ratings are a ubiquitous feature of restaurants featuring Thai food, so we know very well that it’s an imprecise thing that can be inconsistent or relative to each kitchen. Because we were ordering to share among several people with different spice preferences, we went conservative and specified 3 or 4 out of 10 for most of the items. These were plenty spicy for those of us who would normally have requested higher! The biggest spice lover in our group did order one item for his exclusive consumption at an 8. Based on the “3 and 4” dishes, he was ready for some serious fire with the “8”… but said it really was not much hotter. After a few more visits we should have a better feel for this there– and we do plan on many more visits!
