The interior is nicely done with lots of wood. Loved the tartan wallpaper in the bathroom.
I tried the Beef Guinness Stew, and it was very good! It was definitely different than most beef stews I’ve had before (I am a beef stew LOVERRRR) but it was still really good! It is important for me to tell you that the beef is VERY tender! 🙂 The Potato Skins were also pretty good, but the stew was the highlight for me! As I said, the broth is a bit different — it almost tastes like there’s a bit of tomato in the broth but I couldn’t put my finger on it! Not bad, but just be aware it’s a bit different! Their House Red Wine was a Silk & Spice Red Blend which I was very pleased with, as it was a different choice than a lot of bars have, and it’s not one of the bare minimum cheap typical wines, so I was very pleased. It was only $8 too. They price things VERY appropriately, and I was so glad! As a bartender, I also tried their Lavender Haze podcast and it was great! Floral and sweet but not too much… almost like a slightly sweeter French 75!
The servers were SO so kind and helpful!! They were very understanding about my group having to come at an odd time right before the kitchen closed and they were still patient and helpful as we tried to quickly make our food decisions! The bartenders, servers, and hosts were just very friendly and welcoming and made us feel happy to have gone there!!
It’s a very warm, dark, cozy space. It is awesome! We really enjoyed our late dinner!
We loved the rueben egg rolls, the fish and chips were perfect.
I would recommend stopping and trying this new establishment
Oh my goodness. And I do mean goodness! Great location, great atmosphere, great food, and friendly staff.
We started off with a couple appetizers: The High Street Crispy Shrimp was delectable. It had a whisky glaze and came with a malt vinegar slaw. I am not a cole slaw person. But this changed my mind. So different than all the cookie cutter slaws. The flavor of the shrimp was very satisfying, and I could have made a meal out of just this–hah, and should have when I think of all I had eaten. “Crispy” was an understatement. Delicious. The potato leek soup was good and hot and was served with a large slice of soda bread. In fact, all the food here was quite plentiful.
I chose the fish and chips for my entrée. This dish was a close second to the fish and chips I once had at a Scottish pub in Victoria, Canada. The fish and chips at The Lucky Well was absolutely perfection. It came with some malt vinegar slaw and mushy peas, and a side of crinkle sliced fries. They were crisp outside and soft inside and very flavorful. All were equally good and great accompaniments to the meal. My husband had the handheld beer battered cod on rye with onion rings. Equally as good as the cod entrée.
My brother-in-law opted for shepherd’s pie. It was rich and delicious and comforting.
We shared the cheesecake and Guinness bread pudding for dessert. Oh my. I do not like bread pudding. Until now. It was hot and crispy with tart apples and a wonderfully rich whisky caramel sauce. The cheesecake was one of the best I have had. It, too, had a caramel sauce, and just one small bite was a fluffy explosion of cream.
What a great time at The Lucky Well, and a delicious meal. I’m very glad we live only a short distance away. We will return.
Julia was our server and she was fantastic. She was kind, attentive, and made us feel so welcome. The whole place has an easy, cozy vibe that keeps me coming back. Highly recommend for great food, great service, and a great time in Hamilton.
