Up, Up & Away!
Would give their catering ten stars if we could! Our company sponsors a charitable fundraiser and we always need a quick mid-day bite for the crew. Last weekend we ordered via the website a mix of charcuterie trays, a veggie tray and chips with dips. Simple to order, ready to pick up at the time we chose, came with serving utensils, plates, napkins, everything we needed. It couldn’t get easier to have flavorful, well presented food for a gathering. This is our new go-to for catering!

Housed in a repurposed old garage, McLain’s runs like exactly what it looks like now: a well-oiled machine.
It’s busy. Always.
But somehow, food moves fast. Coffee moves faster. Nobody looks panicked. Nobody looks lost. It’s organized chaos in the best way. Like watching a pit crew run brunch.
Their seasonal drinks are consistently cute, creative, and actually good. Not just Instagram bait in a cup. Thoughtful flavors. Balanced sweetness. No shortcuts.
Then there’s the bakery.
Good luck.
The display case is a psychological test. Fresh pastries stacked like edible art, daring you to choose. Cinnamon rolls that could send you into a sugar coma. Pecan twists. Danishes. Cookies. Scones. All of it whispering, “Just get one more.”
Order paralysis, activated. In the best way.
They also offer solid brunch plates and sandwiches. Breakfast plates, grilled paninis. Plenty of “real food” options if you’re pretending you’re not here for sugar and caffeine.
Which brings me to the letdown.
I ordered the pepper jack breakfast burrito.
And listen.
It was as disappointing as the season finale of Game of Thrones.
All that buildup.
All that lore.
The beautiful bakery.
The curated retail section.
The case full of local and house-made goods.
The carefully crafted seasonal drinks.
And then… that burrito.
Flat flavors.
Mushy texture.
No real identity.
The only thing doing any work was the hot sauce it was swimming in.
It felt like the one thing in the building that didn’t get the memo about standards.
Thankfully, redemption came quickly.
A pecan twist. Perfectly flaky, buttery, just sweet enough.
A seasonal latte topped with cold foam. Balanced, smooth, dialed in.
Coffee and pastry saved the day.
Final Thoughts
McLain’s is a Kansas City institution for a reason.
It’s efficient.
It’s welcoming.
It understands presentation, flow, and consistency.

A huge thank you to for the wonderful service provided for our baby shower event on July 26, 2025. Everything went perfectly. Thomas was our server and he was excellent. He anticipated our needs and was polite and professional. I must also praise the food. It was delicious and I received compliments from all the guests on how wonderful it was. Several guests mentioned they would love to hold an event at McLain’s in the future as they were so impressed with the quality of food and service.
Awesome job!

I’ve never tried their food but their bakes goods and coffees are delicious. Price for a coffee is fairly reasonable for what I would expect from a place like theirs. I only wish they had more flavors to add. Their cookies are also a good price for the size and the delicious flavor. I would definitely suggest the chocolate snickerdoodle. I’m not big on cake pops but theirs are the best and the only ones I’ve tried that I will go back for more. Seriously melt in your mouth. I love going to them when I need a nice dessert gift because I know they have beautiful desserts. You just have to get there early bc you know they are gonna be picked thru as I’m sure others feel the same and they are only human and baking these goods from hand so there is only so much they can make. Seems from some of these other comments others expect them to be mass producing these goods or putting less effort in their quality in order to make more. It should say something about their greatness that they sell out early.

Great coffee drinks! Service was amazing. To be fair, we didn’t have any food, but it looked great! Good presentation on the food and large quantities.

I must say, I believe this is the best restaurant in Shawnee. It’s becoming a favorite of ours as we’ve loved the food each time. This was our first time dining in for lunch and the atmosphere is great too. Friendly staff, an array of products sold, and a beautiful setup for lots of natural light to come in, you’ll enjoy your time here.
Personally, I love the amount of healthy options they have. This time I went with the harvest quinoa bowl. Very fresh with great ingredients.

Love this place. Nice little brunch place to relax and enjoy a nice meal and coffee with a few friends (or alone). The food is great. They have a bakery as well. Delicious. Calm environment. You clean up after yourself and pack to go yourself, if needed. Staff doesn’t bother you, which is nice.

My girlfriends and I were told McClain’s was the place to go for lunch. Not so. A girl was cleaning the glass on the inside of the door so we weren’t able to get in so I opened it. Not a hello or welcome…just a stare. Typical 20 something attitude. After ordering, I selected a table and another young gal flipped by and dropped off my food without so much as a smile or “enjoy your food”. The quiche was terrible and must have sitting around from the day before. The argula salad was a joke. Nothing warm and fuzzy about the establishment. I won’t go into it but both of my friends also disliked their food. One didn’t even eat it. None of us will be back. Buyer beware!
