Reviews
For example, the Korean barbecue tartare was overly spicy and had far too much sauce compared to the amount of meat, which completely overpowered the main ingredient. The same issue happened with the tuna tacos: there was so much sauce that the tuna was barely noticeable. Honestly, it felt more like sauce with a hint of tuna rather than an actual tuna taco.
The Wagyu nigiri was also difficult to enjoy. The cut of meat was too large for one bite and didn’t feel pleasant to eat. It would work much better if served in two pieces, with a better cut, or even lightly seared/flambéed the way it’s done in high-end restaurants.
The highlight of the dinner was definitely the duck roll, which was genuinely delicious and the most well-executed dish.
One more important point: the music was way too loud, making it hard to have a conversation and fully enjoy the experience, especially for a restaurant where you’re meant to share the moment with whoever you’re dining with.
Overall, Kitten has potential, but I think the portions, sauce balance, and atmosphere need refinement. Considering the price point, the quality doesn’t fully match the expectation. With a few adjustments, it could be a much stronger experience.
We tried several dishes from the menu and while we didn’t dislike any of them, we were also not impressed.
The kitchen uses good quality products organized around an interesting concept: a kind of Japanese fusion.
The execution needs to be refined. We found several dishes unbalanced. The Korean BBQ steak tartare had too much sauce and relatively less meat. The tuna tacos, I felt, also had too much sauce and too little fish. Some of the main ingredients are being overpowered by seasoning, which, I find works best when it makes the main ingredient shine rather than when they cast a shadow over it.
The Wagyu nigiri, which they list as one of their specials, was also difficult to enjoy. The presentation comes with a smoke machine, which does add flavor and to the experience. However, the piece is presented as a single piece nigiri, but may be the size of two or three nigiri making it hard to enjoy in one bite. Had the same dish been presented as two pieces instead of one, it would have been better. This gigantic nigiri with a large and thin piece of meat comes with a nice sweet sauce that compliments it nicely.
We enjoyed the duck roll. The nigiri (we tried salmon and tuna) were good, though we found the rice base to be too compacted and somewhat wetter than usual.
We also liked our cocktails and the sake selection.
We were also disappointed with the service and the structure of the restaurant. We were sat on high top tables attached to the windows. Yes there is a nice view. But the table top is much too shallow making it hard to find space for the dishes and a challenge to share them with other people in your group. Empty cocktails glasses were left on our table throughout the dinner and forty dishes were not cleared when appropriate.
This is a restaurant/club type of place where the music is loud. This does work for some dinners, but you should know what it is.
Overall, Kitten has potential, and some of the offerings are close to hitting the right spot. Currently, the experience is a bit expensive for what it delivers.
Dessert was different, a matcha roll, it was soft and sweet, perfectly balanced and not overly sweet.
