This mom and pop establishment has a quaint feel that is meant to evoke nostalgia. I stopped by after seeing this place on the Eat Okra app.
I travel for work and have learned that Charleston is not very friendly to my kind. That being said, I felt like I was talking to my dad when I was asking about the menu. He was so kind and accommodating. I had the baked chicken, white rice, cabbage and mac and cheese. Hands down they have the best mac and cheese that I’ve ever gotten from a restaurant. I’m from alabama and I’m the person that has been assigned to make the mac and cheese for my family and friends for over 20 years now, so I know a little about this subject. The cabbage was a little different for me, because it had this sweetness to it that I’m not accustomed to. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and will go back.

I was in town for a conference this week, looking for a place to eat when I found East Side Soul Food, easy walking distance from the conference center. From the moment I walked in, smelled the food, and met Mr. Brooks, I knew I’d come to the right place. I went back almost every day until I had to go home. Not only was everything I ordered perfectly seasoned and served piping hot, the portions are great, the price beyond reasonable, and Mr. Brooks is so warm and welcoming, I felt like I was in my family’s kitchen. I never had a bad meal. The fried shrimp was the best I’ve ever had, the baked chicken melt in your mouth tender, the sides were all delicious and I tried a lot of them! This was my respite after long days of presentations. And this was definitely the place I wanted to spend my money after witnessing the gentrification that is happening in this city. This review isn’t for locals because y’all clearly already know this spot! But for folks visiting from out of town, do yourself a favor and take the time to walk over to East Side Soul Food for a meal (or two, or three). You’ll be glad you did.

The place doesn’t look like much from the surface but man is it good stop for southern cooking. What they lack in fancy presentation they more than make up for with their foods. This is a good example of don’t judge a book by its cover because it was one of the best meals we had while in Charleston. Would definitely come back whenever we can make it to Charleston again.

My wife and I stopped by East Side Soul Food earlier this week for some local fare, based on the reviews we found online. We were greeted by a gentleman we assumed to be the owner, and our order was taken by a young woman we presumed to be his daughter. Both were extremely friendly and helpful in guiding us through the menu.

I ordered the baked chicken with a side of collard greens, while my wife chose the ribs with a side of mac and cheese. We also tried the cornbread, lemonade, and some cake for dessert.

The baked chicken seemed more braised than baked—which was probably a good thing. I’m not sure what it was cooked or marinated in, but it was possibly the juiciest, most tender, and most flavorful chicken I’ve ever had. The collard greens were also cooked to perfection.

My wife’s ribs and the mac and cheese were equally delicious. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the southern hospitality. We’ll definitely return on our next trip to Charleston.

Best fried shrimp in all of Charleston!! We have been living here for over 10 years and have tried every fried seafood available and are shocked we have been missing out this entire time! We definitely will be coming back. We also got the Mac and cheese and cornbread and it was incredible too! Love the great energy everyone had too 🙂

We were in town on vacation and we’re looking for some good comfort soul food and East Side Soul did not disappoint! Mr. Brooks and his son Justin are genuinely kind gentlemen and the food was just what we needed. Truly the best fried catfish around! If you’re in the area you gotta stop in and show some love. ❤️

This soul food restaurant offers a truly satisfying experience from start to finish. The food is flavorful, comforting, and cooked to perfection, with each dish reflecting the richness of classic soul food. Portions are generous and worth the price. The service is excellent, as the staff are polite, attentive, and quick to assist, creating a welcoming atmosphere for customers. The restaurant’s ambiance is warm and cozy, making it a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal with friends or family. Overall, the combination of delicious food, great service, and pleasant surroundings makes this place worth visiting again.

This was the best restaurant I ate at in Charleston. Best tasting food, best value, nice quiet atmosphere with old school westerns playing in the background lol. I ate here twice on my visit to Charleston, had the baked chicken special both times with the Luscious lima beans and mac and cheese play I also got a chance to try to fry fish and collard greens and I highly recommend all of them! I can’t wait to get back to Charleston to slide through one more time. Best red rice in the city!

Decent place for some local food. The restaurant isn’t what you’d call nice but I was there for the food so that didn’t matter too much. The owner was nice
The food was good but definitely on the saltier side. I had the fried chicken wing and fried pork chop with yellow rice. Fried chicken was good but the pork chop was quite dry. yellow rice was good.
The price and portion is mediocre. Total for my meal with tips was around 20 dollars and I feel like there could’ve been a bit more food.

Small hole in the wall soul food restaurant. The fried shrimp is to die for, so delicious! The fried fish is also really good. The owner and chef, Mr. Brooks is super nice and personable. Definitely recommend this spot if you are in Charleston.
