Ichiban to Close After 36 Years in Downtown Minneapolis
Reviews
We had a bunch of different raw fish, the grilled octopus, fried soft shell crab, fried oysters, most of their salads, and some dessert. There was no particular item that I didn’t feel was tasty and I went back for seconds on the creme brûlée.
Our other favorite AYCE spot in in the Twin Cities is Tokyo Sushi – this place has superior quality food and a better selection, but it is 30-40% more expensive and you will likely have to wait to get a seat. We had to wait nearly an hour and a half on a week night. This won’t take Tokyo Sushi’s spot in our rotation, but it will definitely be added to the mix for more special occasions.
Note: they did increase their price to $47/person.
The service was friendly and attentive.
The atmosphere was fantastic.
We have always had a great experience here. Everyone we have brought to Ichiban ends up loving it and usually claims it as their new favorite sushi spot. At this point, we sit down and are usually ready to order right away because we already know exactly what we love.
Seating:
We have sat everywhere, including the bar, sushi bar, tables, and booths. Our favorite place to sit is directly in front of the sushi bar, where you can watch all of the sushi being made. It really adds to the overall experience. I usually come here with a small group of 2 to 4 people, but when we have had a larger group, we have never had any issues.
Service:
The service is consistently excellent. The waitresses and waiters are attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Drinks are always refilled, they check in frequently, and they are happy to answer any questions about the menu. You never feel rushed, but you also never feel forgotten.
Ordering experience:
They now have iPads at the tables, which makes ordering even better. You can see photos of each roll and read detailed descriptions of what is included, which is incredibly helpful and encourages me to try something new every time I visit.
Food:
The rolls are larger than most other sushi places we have been to and contain less rice, which really lets the fish shine. The quality is consistently excellent and truly unmatched for a sushi restaurant in the Midwest. Everything tastes fresh, balanced, and thoughtfully prepared.
I usually come here when I am really craving sushi and want a full meal, since they only have all-you-can-eat. The rolls are generous and filling, so it feels more like a sit-down dinner spot rather than a quick stop for just one or two rolls. I have only been here for dinner and not lunch.
Vibe:
Very cozy, comfortable, and slightly elevated. The details really stand out. The heavy dinnerware, quality chopsticks, and even the napkins show attention to detail.
Price:
The price reflects the quality. Between the fish, portion sizes, and service, it feels more than fair for what you get for AYCE.
Overall:
9.25/10. Only because I once had their cheesecake, and it was truly one of the best desserts I have ever had. They have not had it since, and I still call every month when the dessert specials change to see if it is back. BUT, it’s our go-to sushi spot and the one we recommend to everyone.
highly recommend making a reservation for larger parties. also black toilets in the restroom are diabolical D: be careful
