The hospitality was and the food was great.
We had caldo de res, beef & chicken fajitas, and carne guisada.
The homemade harina tortillas were absolutely delicious.
The only thing I hate to mention is the price of the drinks. I paid $9.74 for two bottles of Mexican sodas (Jarritos). Leaving there, I went to HEB down the road and bought a 2-liter Jarritos for $1.87.
That said, we will definitely return for the food — we’ll just skip the drinks next time.
Thank you very much for a perfect dinner with my father.

Wonderful, quaint local restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere, great service, and excellent food. La Cantera is the kind of place that evokes longings-some days you wake up craving their distinctive flavors. I’m a fan of their Huevos Rancheros, although other options are also delicious. Always good!

Had a family gathering here for lunch on a busy Sunday. We had a about a 20 minute wait because we had a larger group. Most seating is indoor but there are a few tables outside. They feature their own homemade tortillas, both flour and corn, and some homemade baked goods, too. We enjoyed good service and the prices are reasonable. I had the fajita plate, my wife had cheese enchiladas and beans, and others had a mixed plate with taco, cheese enchilada, rice and beans. All were quite tasty and decent portions.Their chips and salsa are complimentary. No adult beverages are available. They offer a savory red salsa, spicy red, and a medium green salsa. All were good. Parking is on the street and the restaurant is clean and pleasant.

Good food, but not great. Didn’t like the American cheese on the breakfast tacos. Chips and salsa were good. My son had the pancake breakfast with eggs and sausage. The pancakes were ok to good. They have red or green salsa they can bring by separately. I prefer the green. The red seemed too thin, almost like water. It had some heat with no other flavors. Service overall was great.

Service was a bit slow – water wasn’t refilled and I had to ask the people sitting next to me for the hot sauces because my waiter failed to bring me any. Food was ok but not great. The chilaquiles was more chips than eggs, so a bit carb heavy. Sitting outside was nice except for the finches in the bird nest in the awning – they were annoying.
I’m up to trying this place again for lunch. Maybe inside though.

I had to make a run to Lockhart and figured we would check this place out. There was a bit sign on the front of the restaurant that said “Homemade Tortillas”. That is where the positive part stops. We walk in and were immediately seated. There were probably 3 other folks at tables in the restaurant. The our young server quickly took our drink order and brought us chips and salsa. The salsa was just ok. It was bland and did not have any spice to it at all. I had ordered the Un Poco de todo. The cheese enchilada had a nice gravy to it, but they use American cheese in their taco and enchiladas. That drives me nuts when Mexican restaurants do this and call this “authentic”. If you go to Mexico, you do not see “American Cheese” on any of their dishes, even in their “Tex Mex” restaurants. I understand it’s a cost thing. To me, it makes the meal bland. I expected the crispy taco meat to have a bit more cumin flavor. There was hardly any seasoning at all. The beans also had zero flavor to them. The Mexican rice was just “meh”. We also ordered the Mari’s Pollo. It was heavily breaded and had a Ranchero sauce on top. To me, it tasted more like Chicken Parm. Wait, is this an Italian place or a Mexican joint? Once you scraped off the breading, you can see their small piece of chicken. That was ok once you removed it.
I did see they had some sort of bug light in the corner, but we were bombarded with flies. I did had to laugh when our server brought out the little handheld device to take our payment. The minimum option for a tip was 18%. The service was good, but was not worthy of an 18% tip. I could have put my own custom tip on there, but decided to cut my losses and get out.
I am not sure whose family’s recipes they are using, but the Abuela needs to come back and show them how it’s done. This had to be some of the worst Mexican food I have ever had. The only good thing is the Tortillas were homemade. I did have to laugh because they did not have enough color on them. Thanks, we will not be back. Save yourself some time and skip this place if you are considering checking it out. I am not sure why it even has a 4.6 rating. Apparently some folks do not know what good Mexican food is.

Homemade tortillas, excellent chips and salsa, honest to goodness tortas. We eat at Mexican restaurants weekly and come from El Paso so we know what decent border food should taste like. Give them a try if you want good food.
