Nestled just a few storefronts down from where the old Big Lots used to be, my husband, our team, and I were excited about completing the new Crunch Fitness. Amidst the bustle of finishing a project, we stumbled upon Koto—a cozy little restaurant that initially impressed us with its warm hospitality.

Despite being a small venue, the staff at Koto wore many hats, serving as hosts, servers, and food runners. Our first visit was smooth and welcoming. We ordered sushi rolls and cocktails, which were served promptly and prepared well. My husband enjoyed a spider roll and a margarita variation, while I had a green dragon roll and a Tom Collins. Everything was delicious, and our server Tommy was friendly, attentive, and accommodating. We genuinely left that evening with great impressions.

Unfortunately, our experience on subsequent visits took a turn. During one visit, a younger staff member seemed visibly irritated when I asked for a more accessible seating arrangement. The booth was difficult for me to maneuver due to my disability, and trying to adjust the bench caused a minor scene. I couldn’t help but wonder if my condition contributed to the cold reception. A second staff member was similarly unwelcoming, which added to our discomfort.

We hoped it was just a bad night—but on our next visit, the same issues resurfaced. A loud and disruptive party disturbed the dining experience, and staff made no effort to intervene. Ironically, I was treated more harshly for politely requesting a seating adjustment than this group was for causing an actual disruption. One of the same staff members from before again stared at me with a glare that made me feel singled out and unwelcome.

On that visit, it took 45 minutes to complete a simple meal—soup, salad, sushi, and one drink—and we had to wait quite a while just for the check. The bench I sat on was also unstable and nearly caused me to fall; fortunately, I was able to brace myself by grabbing the table.

Sadly, what started as a place that felt like a hidden gem has proven to be inconsistent and, most concerning of all, not truly accessible or inclusive. We’ve made the difficult decision to revise our original five-star rating. Until the hospitality and care that initially impressed us returns, we won’t be back.

Amazing place at the least. Im a student at Liberty University and my friends and I went to this place on Thanksgiving. First time being in a hibachi, the experience of having food made live is insane, so awesome. Our waiter was an amazing guy I wish I rememebr his name. Food was delicious!!! Great place, would definitely go back and perfect date spot.

It was a great experience. Our chef was fantastic and the food was delicious! Service was ok but very slow. It took awhile to get going but once the chef got on the grill, everything flowed smoothly. I definitely recommend and look forward to my next visit.

Great food. Chef Lee was excellent. Service wasn’t very good. They automatically add 18% gratuity. They should let their servers earn their tips. I gladly tipped the chef but I wouldn’t have tipped our server so much if I wasn’t forced to. Forgot to bring our drinks, I had to ask for them, then forgot our appetizer. I had to ask her to remove it from our bill. We weren’t even halfway through dinner and she asked if we needed boxes. If they want to add 18% they need to make sure servers are properly trained and good at their job.

Edit (1/27/22) – Adding another star after my latest visit. Service was a lot better than my previous visits

I’ve been eating here since Koto was Kyoto back in the day. Personally I feel the hibachi has taken a step back since the change so these days I stick with sushi. I’ve always heard mixed reviews but in my experience the sushi is always on point. Out of the last 3-4 visits I have no complaints with the food. However, the service leaves a bit to be desired. Nothing totally out of bounds but there are enough flags to knock off two stars

The food was excellent! We did hibachi and our chef was excellent! He was very professional and very skilled at the hibachi! He said he had been a hibachi chef for over 20 years. I would have given it a 5 star but I gave it a 4 because the place is very old and it showed. The bathroom is horrible and the floor was so sticky, my shoes were actually sticking to the floor! They do have beautiful decor in the restaurant. A little upgrade of the floor and tables would certainly get you better ratings.

Service was great but the food was pretty bad. I’d honestly rather eat at a food court. Miso soup was basically just a cup of warm liquid. Salad lettuce was wilted. We didn’t actually sit at the grill but ordered food labeled Hibachi, which I guess is just cooked in the back if you don’t sit at the grill. The food tasted like a dirty, burnt griddle. We both had to immediately slam some Pepto after getting home. Won’t be rushing back there.

Although I do love the food here, we won’t ever be back. Sometimes I need to share food because I can’t eat the whole thing due to medical reasons, there’s a charge for that. Brought our friend on a Thursday and their restaurant was practically empty, she sat and DID NOT eat, then told there’s a SITTING charge. These owners are nickel and diming to death! Every time we go there is a new charge for something, anything and it’s not even food related. Also tips are added into the check when there is 6 or more people at the table——even when you are not a group. So there were 6 people at our table and we didn’t know 3 of them and got a service charge. This is EXACTLY what Robin Alexander did and went out of business.

I love the new space. Food is just as good as the old location. Despite 27 years, it’s nice to still see Dolan cooking. He definitely knows how to cook the steaks.
