I just recommended this restaurant.
And definitely we will future clients ✨️
Shame on people putting in fake reviews.
Xu Ben reviewed about a rice bowl. They didn’t even offer a rice bowl yet. Not very nice 🙁
Absolutely loved this new dumpling spot. Everything is fresh and handmade on site, and you can taste the difference right away. The dumplings have that perfect texture — soft, tender, and just the right amount of chew — with flavorful fillings that taste super fresh.
The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the food came out quickly. It’s clear they put real care into what they make. Cozy atmosphere, fair prices, and some of the best dumplings I’ve had in a long time.
Definitely worth checking out — I’ll be back
There’s just one problem. Shark Ramen is no longer Shark Ramen. It’s become absorbed by “Chicago Dumpling,” and I really wanted to restrain any cynicism going into this new experience for fear of conflating “different” with “bad,” but I can’t hide some disappointment.
Now, to be fair, some of this is my fault. Upon entering, I was greeted with tablets from which to order. Some might instantly consider this a red flag, but having gone to Japan and my fair share of Izakayas, ordering from tablets is pretty on brand for a trendy east Asian restaurant. My mistake was thinking that the screen I ordered from was meant for dining in. I was actually meant to go to the same counter where I’d previously ordered from just half a month ago, where I’d be directed to sit and be given a tablet to order dine-in food. I could have said something, but I didn’t. Strike 1 against me, I admit it.
Strike 1 against Chicago Dumpling was the wait for my food, as my take-out order seemed to be received as an anomaly that flew under the radar, until the nice woman running the show finally realized and got my order done in a jiffy. I tend to skew more favorably toward staff even under the worst conditions, unless they are rude but they were anything but.
Sadly, strike 2 was the lack of tapioca, again, despite coming in later than usual in the hopes that it would be ready. Instead, I chose one of the popping boba options, though I could have put more thought into what flavors would compliment the Taro. Lychee is good, but it is strong, and it clashes with Taro. I still drank it though, because on their own, the flavors were divine.
The food arrived and I went home to eat. I actually enjoyed the customization options. I opted for less ice in my milk tea and removed the egg from my ramen (I like the egg, but not always the yoke). It was nice to fine tune my standard order without having to factor in more specifications to the well-rehearsed malaise the more socially awkward of us dread when ordering in front of a counter. Furthermore, the take-out orders are generous in the quantity of noodles provided and they separate the broth and noodles by default. Upon digging in, the pork chashu set expectations high. At its worst, chashu can sacrifice flavor for a toughness that turns it into more of a chore, but at its best, its fattiness melts in your mouth and pulls apart wonderfully, soaked in a broth as plentiful as the noodles. This was Shark Ramen’s chashu at its best.
I wish the same could be said for the rest. The menma (fermented bamboo shoot), tasted quite bland where it previously was my favorite ingredient in the bowl. The noodles, for as plentiful as they were, carried little of the flavors of the broth with it on the journey from the bowl to my mouth. All this despite an excellent broth. It’s a shame that despite having such a fantastic broth to tie everything together, the ingredients in the bowl had no interest in pulling their weight, much less coalescing to become better than the sum of their parts.
This isn’t a review of Shark Ramen as a whole so much as an account of a frequent patron, going through the same motions, and detailing what (if anything) changed. I really wish I could say that nothing changed, but quite a lot did. Unfortunately, it looks as though it’s busier now than I’ve ever seen it previously, suggesting that this business change has been successful, and that doesn’t surprise me. They’ve de-emphasized ramen, but offered more options. The menu is visible from the outside and detailed at that. There’s probably a lot to love here, but if you’re looking for good ramen, period, there are better places.
Aodake in LaGrange remains the best ramen in this area.
Rebranded now as “Chicago Dumpling” and I had heard good things (and we love some dumplings) so I figured we’d retry. Placed an order for pickup at a specific time – then we were notified it was ready 35 min beforehand. When we called they just said we can pick it up now – well, that’s not the point. We didn’t want it 35 min early. That’s the point of it being a chosen time. Additionally, I don’t want to pick up soup dumplings that have been sitting for 30+ min – that does not hold up. They also said they would “reheat it” – again, no. Not what people want. This place may have a new name and be under “new management” but it is still bad. DO NOT ORDER
***Since the restaurant has chosen to disagree with my assessment, I can actually give the full details. They are right -it[s not how it happened.
What happened was they started making my order at 3:58 and it was ready at 4:21, when we had requested 4:58 pick up.
My husband called to request they remake it because it was inappropriate to have it sit for 30+ min.
They said they would reheat it for him after he said he didn’t want to pick it up early. They then agreed to remake it but only after also repeating they would reheat it for him (sus).
He called back after discussing with me because nobody wants reheated soup dumplings to ask for a refund. He was told they would remake it for him now but could not refund, and he said he could contact the credit card company if they can’t refund. They then told him they are unable to refund and he had to contact the third party ordering service (Chowbus) – which is how you order carry out via their own website (NOT a service like grub hub or ubereats etc).
I know this is incorrect so I called back and yes, demanded a refund. At this point they are lying to my husband. Then, they proceeded to lie to me as well – claiming he hung up on them, that they told him they would cancel the order for him and he would be refunded in 3-5 business days. There’s NO WAY my husband would start a painful “live” chat with Chowbus (there’s no phone number to call) if they had said this. They lied to him and then to me.
Ten minutes after I called (the 3rd phone call we had to make for this travesty of service) THEN my husband gets a text from chowbus saying the order was cancelled.
So there’s two possibilities: you don’t know how to use your own service and you don’t prepare meals in a reasonable time period OR you don’t prepare meals in a reasonable time period and you are liars.
Stay away in either case my friends.
