Dim sum is a Chinese meal of small plates best enjoyed with tea in the company of family and friends. Though dim sum can be found in many forms and in all regions of China, the cuisine is most closely associated with the teahouse culture of Hong Kong and Guangdong Province.

I had a fantastic experience at this Chinese restaurant! From the moment we walked in, the staff was warm, attentive, and welcoming. The atmosphere was clean, cozy, and perfect for both family dinners and casual meals.

This is probably the only time I feel compelled to write a review, because I genuinely used to like this restaurant. In a small town where it’s very hard to find authentic Chinese food, this place stood out to me before. Unfortunately, today’s takeout was truly disappointing.

When I first opened the container, I actually thought the dish looked pretty good. From the appearance alone, the pork belly seemed properly rendered — the fat had clearly been cooked down and wasn’t overly greasy, which is more than I can say for many Chinese restaurants that don’t even bother with that step. The portion size was also larger than I expected. First impression-wise, it honestly looked better than I had anticipated.

However — and this is the critical part — after a few bites, even someone like me who isn’t very sensitive to food quality could tell that the meat was not fresh. It tasted spoiled. At that point, I could not continue eating it or risk my health.

I also didn’t want other customers to unknowingly eat meat like this. I assume the owner wouldn’t want customers getting sick and potentially filing complaints either. So I called the restaurant. The woman who answered the phone was polite and said she would check with the kitchen. She came back and told me the pork belly was freshly cut and that it smelled fine.

I have no way to verify that, but I also don’t believe she had any reason to lie. I told her I was simply giving feedback. I could tell she wanted to handle the situation professionally, but the apology felt problematic to me for two reasons: first, the issue was immediately denied by saying the meat could not be bad because it was freshly cut; second, the apology sounded more like a standard business response than an acknowledgment that something might truly be wrong.

In the end, I threw the food away. What made this experience feel worse is that I became the one wasting food — and I don’t take that lightly. If the food were edible, I would never have thrown it out. Especially because among the many restaurants I’ve tried in Champaign, this dish actually looks more authentic than most.

It’s really a shame. I hope the owner sees this review, takes the feedback seriously, and makes improvements. Thank you.

—— I want to clarify that this is not about personal taste or preference. After a few bites, the condition of the meat raised serious food safety concerns, which is why I stopped eating immediately.

I’m adding this because categorically dismissing customer feedback like this as “impossible” is not only concerning, but potentially risky — for both customers and the business. Situations like this, if not taken seriously, can lead to consequences far more serious than a negative review. I sincerely hope the restaurant reviews its food handling, storage, and quality control processes to ensure this does not happen again.

The cumin lamb chops were a tad dry but tasty still.

The chicken soup dumplings ‍♀️ were pretty horrendous. The skin quite thick and meat filling wasn’t fresh.

The fish congee was soupy boiled rice 稀飯 and not 粥。 Yeah there’s a difference

The lava bun was standard so that was good.

The choysum vegetable was well done.

Service was great! Setting beautiful. Just the food is lack luster.

I came in here for a quick bite after some exams and the food was so good and fresh! They are a bit pricey but the dumplings and tripe were worth it! Everything was good and fresh and these were some of the best dumplings I have ever had!!

I ordered the chicken cogee soup. No taste or flavor at all. All I could taste was the ginger they had put on top of it. The chicken soup dumplings where really dry. Looks like they just tosted them l. First time trying them since they had great reviews.

Lovely dim sum place. Food are of great quality and decent variety. Service here is excellent. Dim Sum is available every day not just weekends, which is a plus. A bit on the expensive side, but it’s the only dim sum place in town so understandable
