Papilio – Italian restaurant in City Of Edinburgh – Website
Papilio, Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Reviews, Ratings, Tips and …
Reviews
Papilio is cosy, authentic and clearly popular, and it’s easy to see how it’s stood the test of time.
Some diners opted for calamari, bruschetta and melon and prawn cocktail for starters, which really caught my eye as being light and delicious. Although I skipped the starters, the melon and prawn cocktail looked like the perfect appetiser ahead of a main course.
There’s plenty to choose from on the menu from pizzas, pastas, calzone and lasagna to cater for everyone’s tastes. You can’t replicate a proper Italian pizza from a supermarket, and you can’t beat one cooked fresh in a traditional Italian restaurant. I chose the pizza pompei (£14.95) which is described as tomato, mozzarella cheese, gorgonzola, spicy sausage, chilli flakes, garlic and rocket.
It didn’t disappoint and I knew I made the right choice as soon as I saw it. It arrived hot, sliced and fresh with just the right hint of chilli to balance the other ingredients without being overpowering. If it looks good, it tastes better and I really enjoyed it. A glass of house red (£6.70 for 250ml) perfectly complemented it.
Everyone at the table enjoyed their meals. A diner opposite me chose the chocolate gateaux with cream for dessert, which looked incredible. For those with a sweet tooth, there’s plenty to tempt you including home-made tiramisu and cheesecake made with a Biscoff base.
To round off the evening, we were offered a shot of Limoncello, which I happily accepted and enjoyed. It was a fitting end to a lovely meal and night out.
In an era and city where mediocrity, inflated prices and patchy customer service often prevails, Papilio sets the bar for others to aspire to. With a varied menu, delicious food, reasonable prices and genuinely friendly and attentive customer service, it’s a stand-out venue and one I would happily recommend and return to time and again.
The venue is not large so you really should book ahead. The only method seems to call them. When we arrived for our booking at 7.30 it was the last free table.
The service was friendly and efficient.
All in all, the best Italian in Edinburgh!
As always the choice of menu items was superb along with the ever present Specials Board.
We all 3 courses each, 2 bottles of wine and 2 double espresso.
Fantastic value and a proper Italian with home cooked food.
To guarantee a seat in this small gem, call ahead. I called on a busy Saturday night and was told to come right for 5pm as they were fully booked. Others walked in, but were not so lucky.
Eggplant dish was delightful and sauce was so fresh! I could hear the kitchen pounding my veal, which was so tender and flavorful in the mushroom cream sauce.
One of the better Italian experiences outside of Italy!
