Delicious burgers (and fries), strong drinks (loved the mulled cider), welcoming staff, and a beautiful fireplace. This spot has a very homey vibe. The only minor complaint I can think of is the the taste of the water, which I think other reviewers mentioned. It just tastes a little off, maybe sulfur-like? Besides that, it was a really nice spot for an early dinner. My mom and I both enjoyed it!

If you like George Washington and a large portions of delicious food, have I got the place for you! Loved the atmosphere here and really enjoyed the food and service! The person who took care of us was very sweet and attentive! Everyone here was very friendly! I had the onion soup, mussels and sticky toffee pudding, ALL DELICIOUS! Hope to come back soon! 🙂

Food quality / price (value) rating 7.5. The atmosphere is colonial tavern. We’ve been coming to this late 1700’s tavern for decades. We frequently come during the Summer to sit outside on one of their incredible multi-level outdoor patios overlooking a beautiful river, where you can sit in the shade of giant oak trees. There are two indoor dining rooms and a 10 seat bar. The menu is a pretty standard tavern menu. There is a real wood burning fireplace in the bar area that gets fired up during the cold weather. Typically, the food is very good. This trip, we started with an appetizer of jalapeno corn bread. I couldn’t taste any jalapeno. They used to serve a really good mixed bread basket before your meal , but that is no longer the case. For an entree, I had the Shrimp Scampi over linguine. The shrimp wasn’t sauteed on high enough heat, and lacked the added flavor that proper sauteing provides. The sauce on the linguine also lacked flavor, and the portion was not very large. The wife had the Pork Schnitzel entree, which also was lacking flavor. The entrees are served ala carte (no bread or salad). The service by Amanda was great. For dessert, we split a Sticky Toffee Pudding with added vanilla ice cream which was excellent. This was on a Sunday evening, so it’s possible the regular chef wasn’t in house, and this could be why the food was a little bland. We’ll still come here because the experience is great even when the food is a little off.

Definitely worth the trip up to Washington Depot for this historic tavern! We only stopped for a drink and light lunch and it was perfect. Parking can be a little tricky if you come at peak hours so best bet at those time might just be parking on the road and on the bridge and walking to the restaurant which is a quick walk. Definitely recommend the chili is is very hearty and filling and a great bang for your buck!

I recently had lunch here with my family of 4 and l I was very disappointed. I ordered the butter milk chicken and it was the worst chicken I have ever had. Absolutely zero seasoning and flavor, the most bland food I have ever eaten. It was so disgusting I couldn’t even bring my self to finish the meal.

On top of this the service was horrible, it took over an hour to get our food and we didn’t order any appetizers as well. We also noticed multiple other tables who had the same or more amount of people receiving their food before us.

I have to I was very disappointed and will never be coming back, I hope others do the same.

I recently moved to the area and have been trying out many local eateries. I have visited GW on 3 separate occasions. I can now saw this restaurant is my all time favorite and I plan on becoming a regular patron here. So far I’ve tried their wings, burgers, fried chicken, meat loaf, pork ragu with parpadelle, brussel.sprouts, chili, and corn bread. Every dish has been fantastic. Dont skip on the dessert either all the pies are tasty, but the sticky coffee cake takes the cake. On all my visits the staff has been warm and welcoming, making me feel right at home. They have a woodburning fireplace as well which adds tons of coziness. I absolutely love this restaurant.

First time and totally amazing. Stopped by after a drive around Lake Waramaug. Service by entire staff top notch. Food excellent. Wedge salad and burger with bacon and cheddar. Mom had the pot pie and daughter grilled chicken and fries. Grilled chicken cooked perfect, moist and flavorful. Creme brulee for dessert and daughter had ENORMOUS ice cream sandwiches….Will be back and highly recommend….and perfect outdoor area by the river, magical day. Thank you

Working in food service for decades I try not to be too harsh but …. our server was friendly enough …. However, definitely not Motivated to be a server! we sat with empty drinks, we told her we would be there for a while hanging out and not taking up tables that were needed it was quiet enough to do that. She came multiple times to ask us if we were ready to order but then later she brings us our check without asking if we wanted a dessert or coffee then brought the check back without ever refilling or asking us if we wanted more drinks so of course we did want more coffee and another beer so it was a constant back-and-forth with a check – you think she would have caught on and just kept it until we asked for the check… There were gifts everywhere so clearly it was a celebration, a birthday, she didn’t even mention or notice…
We would go back because the rest of it was nice others seemed kind of on the ball more so than her and it looks like they have really adorable outdoor seating for nice weather… there is some retraining needed for the customer service and for the benefit of the business to upsell a check…

Always great food. Good portion size. You don’t feel like you overate or are uncomfortable- food is delicious. Always has been. Lots of seating. Lots of nooks in the building. Old old building overlooking a stream. Been gong here my whole life and still would every time I could.
