What/When: Poke bowl. I was a walk in order and got it to go today. When you’re as active as I am, when it’s time to fuel it’s time to fuel. We’re scouting the region and this was my first order. We will likely move to the area.

My biggest expectation is that food is prepared to expectation and taste. This tuna poke bowl was poorly seasoned and overwhelmed by onion fillers.

There was no poke preparation. There was no soy/ponzu marinade on anything, and definitely not on the tuna. It was naked tuna.

There were two types of onions in this “poke” bowl which made it super overwhelming and taste bad – green onions (white bulb ends and green ends) and what was obviously a too-quick-pickle on onions. They completely just tasted like raw onion without a pickling and didn’t work at all.

The chipotle mayo also didn’t work.

I suggest someone with a good pallet go back to the drawing board with the tuna poke bowl and please, for the love of customers, don’t leave out the actual poke marinade.

Their power bowl is really good. The ingredients are fresh and delicious. The sauce is really nice.

I’m in love with their green smoothy. It’s made with coconut milk, banana, pineapple, spinach, ginger and cucumber. It is just the right amount of sweet. It is soooo good!!!

Here’s the quick and dirty:

Any restaurant that offers a wide range of food isn’t going to please everyone. I keep a fairly limited diet for health reasons, so I tend to order the same things.

I’ve enjoyed every meal I’ve had at Kitava. There was only one time when the worker at the cashier could have directed me to the back where the pickup orders were but she did not while I waited so, they could have a sign another time an order got messed up through an app, and the manager (Jen?) gave me the benefit of the doubt and even offered a gift card. That was very kind and her willingness to receive feedforward is refreshing.

The fact that they don’t use seed oils alone makes this my go-to for ordering out—add to that a veggie-forward menu, organic ingredients, sustainably raised animal products, and no sugar or soy.

I get the cost concern. It is a bit pricey, but honestly, everything quality is these days.

Pretty sure Chipotle uses canola oil, so it really comes down to choice.

I love this place!

Deeply disappointed. Fails the Chipotle test (I can get a better veggie rice bowl there). Basically it’s expensive, either bland (without their sauce) or weird (with their sauce) and served cold. They also skimp on everything. I paid extra for wild rice and got even smaller potions than the last time I was there and had the default white rice. I left hungry after clearing my plate. I wasn’t even particularly hungry when I went there.
Beyond the food, it’s just kind of a lame dining experience. It’s pretty noisey even with the place 1/3 full.

I got their Spring Noodle Bowl with Double Plant Protein Patty and a chocolate chip cookie. The noodle bowl was okay – lots of fiber, but I do recommend getting extra protein with it to feel full. As for the cookie… The sweetness is nowhere to be found, and instead you’re left with a funky aftertaste after every bite. I was told they’re still working on the recipe though.
Besides the food, the staff were super friendly, and the atmosphere was wonderful.

I have done dining in and I have done takeout from this restaurant. When I got take out we got 2 main dishes and several sides. The food is good. I would not recommend dining in. The big main window means the room is always a bit overly warm. You order at a counter and you have to bust your own plates. They still want something between an 18% to 25% tip when you order. The food is not THAT good.

Food is just okay. Pricing is absurd. Service leaves a lot to be desired. Parking is a little difficult. Wait times were minimal.

Ordered a bowl to-go with vegan ingredients. It consisted of rice, eggplant, beans, and a veggie patty. That cost me *$23*, before leaving a tip.

The service is that, servicable. When it’s time to leave a tip, they’ll be friendly, but not before or after. One of those places, you know?

For a vegan place, in Berkeley, this spot is average to below average. Ultimately, I would not recommend. At least the butchers son, for example, offers a greater variety of foods, has better service, and complementary coffee. This place is forgettable by comparison. If they wanted to improve, I’d suggest a greater variety of drinks and food, friendlier staff, and cheaper pricing.

The only positive thing about this place is that it looks nice. It’s overpriced, subpar food. The “charred” broccoli was steamed, the fries were inedible and fried to the point that they were cardboard and hollow. The fried chicken has zero seasoning including salt. I’m shocked that this is even a business.

After seeing this place open a bit ago I finally got a chance to try it. I’m not much into food touted as “healthy” as it often means flavorless so I was apprehensive but I’ve been to some terrific similar places around the bay so I had high hopes. I ordered the Power Bowl with the salmon added. I was happy to see it was described as Faroe Island salmon on the menu as we’ve ordered salmon from there directly and it’s been the most delicious of all farmed salmons I’ve tried. Unfortunately not only was the piece a bit small (about the size of a deck of cards) which for $9 add-on was disappointing but it was way overcooked and as dry as a bone. I know people have their opinions on temperature for steaks and fish but good-sourced salmon should be moist and not terribly dry like this was especially since Faroe Island salmon is known for deliciously moist and fatty salmon. This was little better than what canned salmon would be but even drier. They need to train their cook to prepare salmon properly. The leaf salad in the bowl was served bone dry itself and the pieces were quite large making them hard to get in your mouth. The dressing, if that’s what it was, on the side was more like a thick dipping sauce and was not to my liking though I’m a huge avocado fan. I tried pouring it on the salad but it was too thick to even pour and was hard to toss the dressing on my leaves so eating the salad was a dry unpleasant experience as I tried to dip each piece into the small cup. The wild rice was tasty and the cubes of sweet potatoes good as well but almost every bite had some weird mysterious funky smell. At first I couldn’t tell what it was as it was subtle until I discovered it was the pink pickled onions. Now I love pickled foods and often eat gourmet sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, pickled ginger, natto, and pickled onions and I know they can have interesting smells. But these smelled bad and offensive and its nuanced scent affected the other foods in the bowl unpleasantly. The plantains were good but I didn’t find the chipotle style aioli sauce to go so well with them. And $6 for six small plantain piece is quite expensive. I know you can all do the math but $1 for each small piece of plantain is a lot. Unfortunately not sure I’ll be back anytime soon.

It’s not just for health food! Ok, so yes, if you need to avoid gluten, or have other dietary restrictions, Kitava is absolutely perfect. But my family and I don’t have any of that and when I asked my daughter and her friends whether they wanted a hamburger, a burrito, or Kitava, they all screamed for Kitava. One of them had her favorite order memorized. The food is great, the place is chill, the location good, and the people awesome. Parking is often available in the lot behind the post office. Oh, and as of this week they are trying out brunch options!
