What a fantastic meal I had. The calamari was the best I have ever eaten, so tender and flavorful. The anchovies were a large variety and were also delicious. Everything was super fresh.

“Cooking with love feeds your soul” according to the sign hanging below the kitchen pass. And without doubt El Chipiron certainly delivers on this promise. Delicious fresh seafood with a glass of Uruguayan Chardonnay, served in a small and unpretentious dining room located a block from the Port Market. Wonderful service and thank you for speaking English. It was a real pleasure to enjoy our last lunch in Montevideo at your wonderful restaurant. And also such an amazing discovery to find an outstanding seafood restaurant in a city over spilling with meat restaurants (we’re not carnivorous so it was challenging!)

After some very meat-heavy days in Buenos Aires we started our time in Uruguay with some lighter – and absolutely delicious – seafood. My Spanish is not quite good enough to understand everything they offer, so at some point I just kept saying YES to what she was asking… Luckily, I eat everything and everything they served was absolutely delicious, so it seemed as if I couldn’t have gone wrong anyways.
After being chased through the Mercado del Puerto where all tables wer empty and everything looked more like a setup for tourists, hence, this place caught our eyes because it was pretty much a “hole in the wall” kinda place, so we went to explore it and never regretted that decision.

This really small restaurant (reservations recommended if attending with a big party) was sinply great. It is perfect to go with your family. The food is fresh (specially fish) and delicious. I hope to come back some day!!! Unfortunately I did not take pictures of the food! I had the chipirones and they were really good. We also had several type of fish and they were all fresh and savory. We also had some really good Uruguayan wine!

EL CHIPIRON is a refreshing highlight in a sometimes challenging part of the city.
Although it is very busy and a reservation highly recommended, the 3 females (cook, waitress, allrounder) are well organized, friendly, and very efficient. The seafood is fresh, abundant, and of delicious taste. Restrooms are clean and regularly checked.

Although very small with limited seating indoors, this quaint place serves very good fresh fish with friendly service to add to the occasion. When we are in the mood for fish, this is our first choice! During warmer times there is additional seating outside as well.
