The South 40 was built by Arnie & Lola Hansen in 1977. It housed the Homestead women’s clothing store on the main floor, Book Loft on the 2nd floor, and a restaurant in the basement. The Lounge and Casino were added on the main floor in 1986. After 30 years, the Book Loft and Homestead clothing store went by the wayside, but the South 40 remains a fixture in Sidney. In 2009, the Hansen’s daughter and her husband, Ray & Heather Johnson, moved back to Sidney to begin taking over the family businesses. Ray & Heather have continued to run the family business following Lola’s passing in 2024. I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service. I’m from Dallas Texas and have had my fair share of good steaks. The prime rib was outstanding – so tender and flavorful and without a lot of fat. It is probably one of the best I’ve had. I highly recommend.

Great food. We didn’t experience the casino but it does have on attached. I ordered the Philly cheese steak with the sweet potato waffle fries. It was very good. Cooked fresh too as we did have to wait but it was worth it. It came with a dipping sauce that was very tasty. My friend got the hamburger and said it was very good. I would definitely come back.

Our family loves this place very much. We always order steaks – they are very tasty here. The staff is always friendly and attentive to our wishes. The only small minus is that sometimes you have to wait more than 30 minutes for your order. But if you have good company, then time passes quickly with a pleasant conversation.

Food came fast & hot! Wasn’t expecting much for being in a smaller town, but the spaghetti is so good, only thing is they forgot the mushrooms I ordered with my food. My mom had chicken parm and was also delicious! Would recommend 10/10!

Our experience started out pretty good. Got seated quickly for a Saturday night. Salad bar was clean and well stocked with fresh looking ingredients, my huckleberry non alcoholic drink was good. It all stopped there! Waited for over an hour for prime rib! Not sure how that works. Had to get up to ask a server for water because she never came back. When I asked about our wait and drinks it was excuses about being short staffed and new staff.
After waiting for over an hour the food was cold, no apologies about the wait or how bad the food was. I don’t understand how this place has the reviews it does because the low reviews are all about the rudeness of staff, low quality meat, looong wait for something that was already probably cooked, and extremely high prices for low quality food. Then, our credit card was used for someone else’s bill that was $30 more than ours, and again, no apology. I would absolutely not recommend this place.
