One of the most prestigious restaurants in New York. While you’re there, you’ll find American celebrities and their families, and even President Trump and his family are patrons. The restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine, and the service is beyond compare. As a customer, you’re treated like royalty. From the street the entrance is a bit obscure — you can barely see inside or get a sense of the atmosphere. Once you step in, a friendly lady (from Colombia) takes your coat, but after that you’re left to figure out what to do next. After standing there for a few minutes, I asked her where to check in, and she said to wait for the maître d’.
While waiting, I watched the scene unfold: a very full restaurant with lots of busy waiters, all seemingly speaking Italian. It was actually fun to observe the lively, slightly chaotic atmosphere — very “Italian New York.” The guests were predominantly men, including two groups of around eight.
When the maître d’ finally came over, he asked if I had a reservation. I said yes, but he couldn’t find it and gave off an air that he might not be able to seat us. He asked what time we had booked, and when I answered “a few hours ago,” he made it seem as if that was too last-minute. At that point we didn’t feel very welcome and even suggested coming back another day. But after searching by phone number, he found the reservation and ended up seating us, handing us over to a friendly waiter from Ecuador.
We were quickly served some bread varieties and tasty small Italian bites. We asked the waiter for help with the wine list, but to be honest, he didn’t seem very familiar with it — disappointing as the list consists mostly of quite pricey Italian wines. We chose a mid-priced one at around $130.
The nice waiter skillfully recited the specials (or the entire menu, I’m not sure), and I ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon and the rack of lamb. Both dishes were good. The place was packed and noisy, but that actually fit the New York/Italian vibe — more Little Italy than Greenwich Village.
Overall, it’s a unique restaurant with lively energy, but $440 (ex tip) for two people for two courses each feels too expensive for the experience. Hence the 3-star rating.

fantastic service and serving old school vibe. the service and vibe were perfect for date night. the food was very good but not so good to justify the cost. you go for the experience and i would go back but you can find equivalent and better pasta for lower prices elsewhere.

Il Mulino sets a ridiculously high standard in fine dining. We have been guests for nearly 3 decades. Each time visit seems to surpass the last. Claudio, Louis and the entire team strive and succeed in making you feel like family! The food quality is top notch! The service is 6 stars! Hands down the best dining experience I’ve had in NYC. Was greeted at the table by rounds of appetizers we didn’t even order, nor had to pay for (bruschetta, cheeses, fried zucchini, garlic bread, and a bread basket). Then the manager came over and explained each of his favorite menu items in incredible detail. Felt so authentically Italian and just a beyond lovely experience. Went for my birthday and would recommend everyone try for a special occasion. Food was best Italian ive had (outside of Italy itself).

Do not confuse this with any other Il Mulino Restaurant. This is I think the original and undoubtedly the best. This is like eating in the old world Italy. Great service and superb food in a true Italian ambience. I have eaten here many times when in New York and always look forward to the experience. A great place to dine.

Our visit to Il Mulino was nothing short of incredible. The evening began with a refreshing Cima di Conegliano and Coca-Cola, paired perfectly with appetizers like creamy burrata caprese, classic Caesar, escargot, and perfectly crispy calamari.
The squid ink pasta and lobster dishes were highlights, showcasing fresh ingredients and bold flavors. For mains, the bucatini all’Amatriciana was rich and satisfying, while the 1/2 rack of lamb was tender and expertly seasoned.
The meal ended on a high note with ricotta cheesecake, orange Grand Marnier, and expertly brewed espresso and cappuccino. Impeccable service and a cozy ambiance made it an unforgettable dining experience!

Dimly-lit NYC-style classic Italian restaurant with excellent service. Staff constantly availed themselves to us without overdoing it (quite a tactful feat). We had a very lovely and lengthy dinner. It is fairly expensive even for the area so I would restrict visits to special occasions.

Food was inexplicably poor, the eggplant parm appetizer tasteless and the linguine in the frutti di mari overcooked to mush. The garlic bread and the veal chop were excellent though, as was the amazing service and atmosphere. Incredibly lucky to get a table here. Worth a visit but I would suggest sticking to the old boy food like steaks and chops.
