The store is tiny and almost missable along this busy street. It’s the width of a large closet and, to my recollection, there’s no place to stay and eat. Aside from a few beverage choices, the menu’s pretty limited to kimbap, but what else would you be here for? I wanted to try as many different rolls as possible, so I ordered four or five different kinds and found them to be fantastic – well seasoned rice, a good balance of rice and fillings, and fresh as can be. I was especially taken by their ‘keto’ kimbap, which replaces the standard layer of rice with shredded eggs. Keto and protein-heavy dieters, you will love this take on kimbap.
The wife and husband duo that work this small shop are as sweet as can be. Though there’s always someone hard at work preparing new kimbap rolls behind the counter, a lot of the menu items on the menu have been prepped earlier in the day, so my larger order was fulfilled in absolutely no time.
You can really taste the care they put into it. it’s so flavorful, and as soon as you open the lid, the aroma of sesame oil is amazing.
Today, I tried the classic kimbap, keto, and tuna rolls, and I’m already looking forward to trying more next time
I’ve never found a decent Kimbap place to my liking anywhere nearby in NJ or NYC. So I’m so glad I found this place! It seemed their Kimbaps are prepared ahead and ready to go, so everything comes out super quick. It’s a very small to-go joint, and I loved the cozy mom-and-pop vibe — the owner was super nice and welcoming.
I wasn’t hungry, not in the stomach, anyway. But as we parked on road Avenue, I saw the simple sign on the storefront with big menu pricing. This was not a shrewd marketing plan. This was a gritty old fashioned 아저씨 style store.
A deeper kind of hunger awoke – a hollowness that comes from moving too long without arriving at comfort.
Inside, the air was warm and full of rice and simple vinegar. a scent that promised.
I ordered the spicy tuna. The staff built it before me, hands moving with the quiet certainty of a men who know. Not too much of this, not too little of that. I also ordered the 옛날 김밥.
The owner asked about my daughter and me. We exchanged knowing glances of the burden of raising children and smiled.
That first bite. It wasn’t just food. It was a memory of things being right. The tuna was clean and fierce, the rice a tender, clinging cloud. There was no swamp of mayonnaise, no deceit. It was honest. It was fire, the kind that warms you from the inside, that tells you you’re in the right place. All this at the right price to take you back in time when a roll of kimbap made the week’s worries disappear.
