The food is packed with flavour, the service is great and quick, only good things to say!
Will definitely come back.
I also want to highlight their delicious salads—fresh, flavorful, and well-presented. If you’re looking for a great spot for Japanese cuisine, Tanaka is a must-visit! Highly recommend!
ATMOSPHERE:
Located in Maui Mall Village, they’ve taken up the corner spot that previously housed Oritsu Ramen and before that, Maui Mixed Plate. The new dining room looks nice, with warm colors, tasteful decor and retains the floor to ceiling windows.
RESERVATIONS:
No sure if they’re even taken, but being a new biz, I’ve heard of small lines. We went off-peak at 4pm on a Monday and had no wait.
PARKING:
Plenty of free parking within the mall.
MENU:
Izakaya-style apps, salads, ramen in 5 broths, rice dishes, mochi ice cream. Not sure on the alcohol situation as I didn’t see a beverage menu. No combo meals.
FOOD:
Tofu Avocado Salad
There was a good amount of mixed greens under the slices of tofu, though not much avocado. The dish was very dry so we asked for more sesame dressing in which a tiny ramekin was brought over.
Gyoza (6 pcs.)
It was more like mini gyozas as they’re smaller than the norm, with an average amount of filling and tasty dipping sauce.
Tanaka Combo
The combo is a mixture of pork and chicken broths, served hot but not searing. If you’re into light, savory broths, or are hungover, this is for you. It leaned more towards chicken broth and wasn’t creamy or heavy (a plus for me). The first few sips of broth were satisfying but got very boring soon after. I opted for thick noodles which were a favorable eggy in flavor and springy in texture. Due to the current ghastly egg shortage situation, they were totally out of egg toppings, instead offering an additional slice of thin chashu. Other toppings were wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts and green onions.
Tanaka Classic
The spouse’s dish in which he added “level 3 spice” that turned the broth red-orange. He really liked his bowl and was surprised that I said I probably didn’t need to eat here again.
I wanted to try the fried rice but no small portions or combos were available.
SERVICE:
Greeting was immediate and welcoming. Food delivery was quick. Female server was friendly but there was no follow up. Plates were cleared but crumbs were left on the table, with the check getting placed right on top of the mess.
OVERALL:
Menu selections that differ from the other ramen shops in the area. Option to customize/build your own ramen. Three choices of noodles. Better than Ramen Bones but I still prefer Ramen Ya.
