I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Saffron De Twah, a James Beard-nominated modern Moroccan bistro, twice now, and indulging in their chef’s tasting menu. Chef Omar is truly remarkable, and what he’s creating on the east side of Detroit is absolutely delicious. The restaurant has a small, quaint atmosphere, but the flavors are incredibly bold.

Saffron De Twah is worth the drive off the traditional path. It’s an experience that will definitely challenge your palate. Whether you choose to dine in and savor Chef Omar’s chef’s table meal at a very reasonable price or opt for takeout, this spot is a must-visit.

The flavors are simply outstanding! My favorites include the couscous and the harissa potatoes. Although we skipped the lamb shank on this visit, I can assure you it’s spectacular—something you definitely shouldn’t miss. The fish and chicken sandwiches are equally amazing.

Chef Omar, the chef-owner, is a two-time finalist for the James Beard Award for Best Chef – Great Lakes, with nominations in 2022 and 2023. Plus, in 2023, he became a Food Network Chopped champion! If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to experience this culinary gem.

Had an amazing time! The chef has been there for 7 years! His parents also had their own restaurant! Very warm hearted and kind! The food was absolutely spectacular! We especially loved the lamb, potato’s and loaded hummus. Note for people looking for drinks, it is a halal establishment with no alcohol, but there is a massive selection of nonalcoholic beer, wine, and unique pops! Thank you for a great experience! While this isn’t a downtown or midtown restaurant, the food is worth the visit!

This place is sweet. there was only the chef/owner (im assuming) in the kitchen and one host/bus girl, so things took a minute to get going. you order at a window and then they bring it out. food was amazing. the loaded hummus was insane along with the pita chips. I would eat this weekly. fish sandwich was also delish would be 10/10 but I gave it a 8.5 because there were huge pieces of cabbage not shredded in the slaw mix. flavors were all on point. the bread pudding was incredible as well. try one of the NA malt beverages while youre there! very interesting. overall this place rocks and everyone should try it out!

Overall experience at Saffron De Twah was good. Parking is limited, you may have to park on a side street. Reservations are highly recommended, as this is a small restaurant with limited seating. You have to order at the front counter, and the menus are located there. My wife and I were seated at our reservation time, but waited about 10 minutes until a waitress greeted us. Once we ordered, it took about an hour to get our food, so when you come, be prepared for a long wait.

We ordered the orange blossom lemonade, which was amazing! We also started with harissa potatoes and brussel sprouts. The harissa potatoes lacked a punch but weren’t too bad, standard fried potatoes. The brussel sprouts were fantastic, however. For our mains, we ordered the Moroccan chicken sandwich and lamb shank tagine. The chicken sandwich was the standout, and the lamb shank was good (fork tender), but also lacked a little flavor.

We were given strawberry laziza (non-alcoholic beverage) to try for the wait. I didn’t enjoy it but my wife did! All in all, it was decent experience. The wait took away from the overall experience, and the food wasn’t quite worth the $95 check (tip included). I might come again to try other offerings, but Saffron De Twah won’t be my first stop.

Chef Omar does a wonderful job walking you through his menu! He asks about dietary needs and can modify items to meet them and is very knowledgeable of both the culture and history of the food

My friend and I shared the harissa potatoes, the tomato and goat cheese dip, the chicken and fish sandwiches. Everything was delicious and he even had drink recommendation for each dish. I got the iced sage tea- very refreshing! Zabiha halal and alcohol free 🙂

Worth the trip over to this side of Detroit! It is a small restaurant so would def recommend calling in advance to make a reservation.

Delicious. Wonder what Moroccan food is? Well it is some of the world’s best. Tagine is a stew that can have meat, fruit, vegetables and is often topped on fluffy couscous. The best thing is to come with your friends and just order a bunch of stuff and do like a tapas meal. Harissa potatoes are a little spicy, tomato with goat cheese and pita chips is addictive and their chicken sandwich beats Popeyes, Chick-fil-a and all of em. The owner takes time to talk to the customers and is a good dude.

I met Omar, the owner, this week at a lecture series called Creative Mornings where he sat on a panel about Detroit foodie culture.
He was so passionate and cool that I decided to bring my parents there on their visit this weekend from Pittsburgh.

We had an incredible meal that we all enjoyed immensely. My parents are total foodies especially my dad, and Omar came and hung out with us as we enjoyed the food and talked about all the dishes and what we would enjoy and we just had such a wonderful time.

We ordered the loaded hummus, the carrots, the labneh, The signature goat cheese and tomato dish. Then for entrées, my mom had the lamb shank, and my dad and I had the fish sandwich. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable.

Then we enjoyed the bread pudding for dessert and it was outstanding. We also had the house lemonade, which was incredibly delicious and refreshing. We’ll be back.

There is so much to love about this restaurant! Chef Omar and his entire team go above and beyond to make you feel at home. My meal was absolutely delicious and the portions for the mains were generous. I will definitely be coming back!! I went for an earlier dinner and my table for two was able to be seated right away as a walk-in. I recommend reservations for larger parties.

Amazing food and Atmosphere, clean area. Very authentic. We didn’t have reservations but we were able to have a table right away . I advised to book . Price are so reasonable. We tried Moroccan chicken Sandwich and fish Sandwich. I love how they provide community meals. Aside from the food, Chef Omar is a wonderful person. He has a nice vegetable planted outside the restaurant too
