We were shocked to find you cannot tip your server via card, it will NOT go to them. They can only accept cash for tips, which is about as annoying as you’d expect as we do not carry cash like so many others!
Overall a 5* establishment, but the lack of being able to tip conveniently after such great service means I can only justify a 4* review.
Having read some bad reviews I wasn’t sure on what to expect but we had a superb experience.
the young lads serving Geraint and another young lad were very welcoming and professional…
The menu we were served had variety and the dishes were absolutely delicious. I was personally a huge fan of the katsu pumpkin wow.
Highly recommend, don’t be put off by the reviews.
The duck Massaman curry tastes really good and I would recommend it. It’s rated two chilli’s but shouldn’t have any chilli rating. It’s really warming, has a great taste and is filling. The only thing I’d note was that the duck was a little tough, but that may just be the way duck is.
The chicken Thai Green Curry should have three chilli’s on the menu. It’s far far hotter than the Massaman curry that has the same two chilli rating. The aubergine and broccoli were great choices for the curry, however there was barely any chicken to be able to label it a chicken dish and most pieces were tiny. The curry itself was quite sour. I couldn’t detect any saltiness from the addition of fish sauce. Fish sauce may have helped to offset the sourness and the heat of the curry, allowing me to finish it. Instead, I ate all the meat and veg and left the sauce. I understand that a Green Thai curry is one of the hottest, but this was so hot, I couldn’t eat the curry sauce. I’ve had excellent Green Thai curries elsewhere that have moderated the heat slightly to allow people to enjoy the flavour. Whilst this may not be completely authentic, it does allow someone to enjoy the dish. It was filling but wouldn’t recommend the dish to others. I’ve had much nicer Thai green curry elsewhere that contained more chicken and similar levels of vegetables.
On value for money, I would say that the atmosphere and great staff are definitely worth the money. It’s also better value than the other restaurants based at the Celtic Manor. I would recommend eating here (but not the Thai green curry) if you have no transport into town or just want to try it. Remember to book. However, I am able to source similar or better tasting food for less money, near my home. This reduces the value for money for me. However, someone else who can’t source this type of food elsewhere, may find a greater value in the food for the price.
The food was delicious!! Fresh, well cooked, flavourful and the Katsu sauce was out of this world. It’s made fresh in their kitchen and you can tell. I wish I had the recipe!! I have nothing to fault this place for. It was clean, friendly and attentive and we will definitely be going back.
The restaurant had a lovely relaxed ambience and was very clean and well presented.
The menu was fantastic, it was difficult to choose what to order as it was all so tempting. We decided to go for the taster menu to get a great selection and it did not disappoint! We also added a couple of bao buns as we couldn’t resist.
We enjoyed every dish – particular favourites were the prawn toast (such a delightful mouthful!) The lamb cutlets were cooked to perfection, and the beef Rendang was the best I’ve ever had. The pork belly melted in your mouth and I’ve never had tofu as silky as this.
Not to mention the custard bun – what a wonderfully rich, sweet vanilla custard!
To top it off the service from Ming was wonderful, she really cared about our dining experience and made sure everything was to our liking.
To top it all off, we had the pleasure of talking to Larkin which was lovely. He is such a talented, yet humble chef!
We highly recommended it and would love to return.
